In the end, there was definitely plenty of Makin Trouble at Fermoy, when Scarlett Burnside handled hers, and Dad, Mark’s Bracco Italiano, Owlspoint Makin Trouble, to take Best in Show under GB judge, Bill Browne-Cole, having earlier won the group from Michele Colborne, originally from South Africa, but now living in Lincolnshire, following his Best of Breed under our own Diane Stewart Ritchie. Fun loving ‘Fudge’ is just three years old, and is owned in partnership with Scarlett Burnside, and her Dad, Mark, and was bred in England by Amanda Bell and Nicola Maddox. Scarlett has handled Fudge, named because he is such a ‘sweet’ boy to live with, since his show debut, and now he has the honour of being only the second Bracco to take Best in Show all breeds in Ireland, the first being Stuart Pearson and Carole Dodd’s bitch, Ch & VDH Ch Braccorions Juno What, who clinched it at Killarney in 2018. ‘Fudge’ however, is the first to take the accolade at an International event. Earlier this year, he was second in the group at the IKC Celtic Winners International under Colm Hastings, whose group winner went on to BIS and he won the group at Combined Canine Club International at Easter under Rafael Malo Acrudo, experienced All Breeds judge from Spain who breeds Chinese Crested under his Sirocco prefix. He was also the first Bracco to qualify for the POTY, this under Lynda Matthews, but sadly the much lauded and looked forward to finals did not take place in 2020 as the dreaded Covid overtook all their plans. ‘Fudge’ was no shrinking violet abroad either, as at the tender age of just four months, at the EDS in Poland he was Best Baby Puppy in Breed and Group 4 on both days, and more recently he won the group and BIS 3 at Luxembourg. Fudge is now Top Group 7 on the ICP/Gain Pet Nutrition Top Winners’ Leaderboard.
Fermoy International all breed Championship Show, although down a little in entries, as we all expect to see after Covid, was on Saturday, 30th April, and as usual now, held at the Ferryhouse Sports Complex in Clonmel. A mix of Irish, European and British judges officiated for the day, and loyal sponsors of some 16 odd years now, Royal Canin, with Mary Davidson in charge as usual, was there with a super new mobile unit, to give professional advice to exhibitors, vouchers to the main winners and also support the club financially.

Third place went to ‘Pat’, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen GB Ch Soletrader Pat On The Back owned in partnership with Cathy Collins-Neill and siblings Oliver and Erin Robertson. Second in Group 6 at CW, he took the red rosette under Tom Hehir at IKC St Patrick’s International, and at Mid West went one better, having won the Group under Tony Moran, went on to Reserve Best in Show under Brian Moran. On a great run, Pat then took the Group at Combined National at Easter under Amanda Sammon, finishing with another Reserve Best in Show, this time under Tino Pehar from Croatia. Top of the Group 6 ICP/GAIN Pet Nutrition Top Winners’ Leaderboard, what’s next, we wonder, for this dynamic little showman….
Irish Canine Press and our photo partners RMD Images, must apologise to exhibitors, and the sponsors, Royal Canin, that we did not have our stand where it usually is situated, but due to circumstances beyond our control, and to the host club’s ‘hands being tied’, we were told, after waiting for six hours, to put our tent up at the gate, then an hour later, to move our stand down the field. This we declined to do, as it was too big a job to take the tent and all our gear down, and erect it far away from the photo area and the rings, a three hour job; pointless as we would have missed group and puppy group photos, and thus not be able to give our usual comprehensive report and group photographic coverage that we have been providing for decades.

Reserve Best in Show went to the precocious little Toy Poodle, Grayco Izadorable, piloted by Sally Burns to top honours. ‘Iza’ is co-owned by breeder, Lesley Howard, Mary Coghlan, and Sally who is responsible for her care, grooming and handling. On the day ‘Miss Vivacious’ charmed the breed and group 9 judge, Stefan Wachter, a Poodle specialist, and was Bill Browne Cole’s choice for runner-up here from the final ten. Group 3 at IKC St Patrick’s International in March under specialist, Marie Hamill, Group 2nd at Mid West National Ch under Finnish Lowchen & Group 9 specialist judge Jari Partanen, Group winner at Combined Canine Club Int under Ewa Nielsen from Sweden, have taken Iza to just ten points off the top on the ICP/Gain Pet Nutrition Top Winners’ Leaderboard G 9.
To finish off the top quartet at Fermoy 2022 was another regularly in the Group ratings, namely
Martin McDonnell’s Dachshund Long Haired Miniature Ch Kinchville Gangster At Smartdac, who began this year with Group 2nd at the IKC St Patrick’s Int., then topping group 4 at Mid West, and again at Combined International, so a nice run to bring him to top of the ICP/GAIN Pet Nutrition Group 4 Top Winners’ Leaderboard.
