Celebrating our 42nd anniversary of
IRISH CANINE PRESS
I wonder how many exhibitors, especially those travelling through Yeats Country to get to the Roscommon Racecourse venue for this year’s Mid West CC Championship show on Saturday, 9th April, took a flutter on the Aintree Grand National runner, the handsome bay, Noble Yeats, Irish bred and trained in Carlow by Emmett Mullins, and whose victory, at 50-1, was called  ‘a fairytale and a fantasy’ by his rider, Sam Waley-Cohen, who had earlier announced his retirement.

And it was a bit of ‘a fairytale and a fantasy’ win at Roscommon Racecourse for Philip Behan and his red Chow Chow, Ch Finn Mc Cool De Los Perros De Bigo at Mingfield, named after the mythical hunter warrior, Fionn Mac Cumhaill, he of the Giant’s Causeway, when Brian Moran, who shares his Woodmore Golden and Flat Coated Retriever prefix with his father, Liam, judging his first Best in Show, called Finn in to top the excellent entry of just under 1,000.  Imported from Spain back in 2018. ‘Finn’ had a great start to his career with Puppy Stakes wins and also group placings back in his first year in Ireland when he also won his Junior Ch title and he topped the breed in 2019 with Annual Ch. Bred by sisters Nurio and Raquel Vigo, his sire was one of the top Chows ever, Ch King of Egypt De Los Perros De Bigo, who won BIS on multiple occasions across Europe, so Finn has a great act to follow.

The new venue certainly met with the approval of the exhibitors, and Show Secretary Myles Leonard, together with his Show Manager, Danny Sinclair, and the rest of their small but very enthusiastic ‘family’ committee, had pulled out all the stops to make it a welcoming show for everyone. Well laid out, good sized rings, an excellent tannoy system with clear communications for all the classes, stakes etc., an excellent food van, providing really tasty food and drinks from early morning, and a real ‘hands on’ bunch of workers, and visible committee, all made for an excellent day for all. Whoever had the connections to order the gorgeous weather would be welcome at all our shows as it was the first time this year where there really was heat in the sunshine which prevailed right through the day, once the chill left the air.

The special show photo background is of Downpatrick Head, a sea stack of scenic and geological importance on the Wild Atlantic Way, near Ballycastle in North Mayo, where the sky outside was as blue as the photograph…...

The Show was generously sponsored by GAIN PET NUTRITION, and were represented on the day by Sean Martin and Jim Treacy.

Reserve BIS was the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, GB Ch Soletrader Pat On The Back, owned in partnership with Cathy Collins Neill and Oliver and Erin Robertson, who had earlier taken his second group win on the trot having won at St Patrick’s Int Show just a few weeks ago. ‘Pat’ was of course handled expertly by Cathy.
