GIBBS the Boss at MWCC
Sw, Port, Ch, Gr US Ch, Arbens Epic Swagg Of Los Perritos, owned by Julie Connolly, Karen Loveless and Virginia Dowty, bred by Lynn Nieto, and handled and prepared by Julie, made recent breed history when he was declared Best in Show at the Mid West Championship Show. By judge Colm Beattie. The multi titled American bred, 'Gibbs' is the first Havanese to take an all breeds Ch Best in Show in almost 20 years, and coincidentally it was Julie Connolly who owned and handled that original, groundbreaking Havanese, Ch Int Ch Indio vom Kapflesberg at Snazzipaws, to top both Fermoy Int and Bull Breeds back in 2005. 'Gibbs' has only been at four shows since his arrival in Ireland late last year and was Group 3 at the DDSS Christmas Ch Show, with a trip to Crufts last month rewarded with the Reserve CC. Taking the runner-up rosette under Colm was Sean Carroll and James Newman's Pomeranian, Ch Toybox Devil's Advocate, Best in Show at Newtownards last year when he was also RBIS at IKC St Patrick's International, with a number of group wins taking him to 2nd Top Group 5 on the GAIN Pet Nutrition/ICP Leaderboard. Third in the BIS line-up was Harry O'Donoghue's young Wire Fox Terrier, Blackdale Headmaster, on his show debut with Martin and Mary O'Donoghue's homebred Labrador Retriever, Philipstown Tennessee Waltz, another winner from this well known kennel, fourth.
This was Mid West Canine Club's third all breed championship show, held in a n excellent venue and in a beautiful spot 'way out west' on a lovely day. Entries have improved, year on year, as news filters through the Irish dog world about the show and this year they had almost 900 dogs. Generously sponsored by GAIN PET NUTRITION, and with a good mix of home grown and foreign judges employed by Myles Leonard and his hard working committee, lets hope that, next year, the show can hit the four figures.
