The Christmas Open show, hosted by the Combined Canine Club and one of the year’s highlights, is always eagerly anticipated by adults and children alike, and once again it attracted a large crowd to take part in the pre-Christmas festivities. From her ten group winners, BIS judge, popular Tralee Secretary Maudie Burke’s Best in Show Winner was the Golden Retriever, Michael Heffernan’s Cummac Pastures of Gold, a lovely early Christmas present, with Reserve BIS going to Ashling Connolly’s Bichon Frise, Ashmair Double Trouble. BIS 3 was Michael Kenneally and Mairead Jones’ Weimaraner, Minama Im On Fire, and BIS 4 went to Christine Bastable’s Smooth Haired Kaninchen Dachshund, Chrishane’s Audrey Tautou. The show was generously sponsored by ROYAL CANIN.
John Burns from County Down had kindly agreed to have some of his working/racing team of Alaskan Malamutes pull Santa’s sleigh (a well-dressed racing rig). Needless to say the children waiting for Santa were most impressed at his arrival from Lapland!

It’s a Happy Christmas for sixteen years old Scarlett Burnside who was crowned Junior Handler of the Year 2016 by judge, Michael Coad, at the JHA of Ireland’s finals at the IKC Show centre on 4th December, taking home the Irish Canine Press Trophy, which will now have 30 years of JH history engraved on it. Scarlett, who qualified from the 15 - 17 years class during the year, handled her Pointer on the day though she is probably known better with her Alaskan Malamute, ‘Marley’ on the end of the lead. She has had great success in the show ring this year with several dogs, both family owned and those she handles for others but the following weekend she was to go on to her greatest success to date when she took ‘Marley’ to BIS at Lille International Ch Show in France, where she has also taken group 7 with Catherine Kelly’s Hungarian Vizsla and 2nd in Group 10 with Joanne and Willie Mullen’s Irish Wolfhound. Scarlett will have a busy year in 2017 representing Ireland in the International Junior Handling finals at Crufts next and also at the European show.
