Tralee Show finished on a high note with a gloriously sunny finale where the BIS winner under Stanley Shen from Singapore was Jeanette Filskov’s multi crowned Golden Retriever, Sh Ch, GB & Dan Sh Ch & Int Ch Abinvale Traguardo, in the capable hands of Emma Archibald, who co-bred ‘Blue’ with her parents, Frank & Bette. Willie and Joanne Mullen’s Irish Wolfhound, Ch Broughadowey Tir Eoghain, was Reserve BIS.

Michael Forte judged the Team Stakes, his winners were Ceri McEwan’s PBGV team, Culdaw’s Diesle From Marunel, GB Ch Maudaxi Tycoon Ginger From Marunnel & Maudaxi Coco Chewnel From Marunnel with second place going to Virginia Dowty’s Bolognese, Clynymona Jo I’m Alone, Clynymona Chelsea Parker At Clarchien and Clynymona White Knight.

Group 1 saw all-breeds judge Soile Bister from Finland in charge; quite a controversial judge at both Limerick and here at Tralee, with her biting use of the grading system where many top GB and Irish winners bit the dust under the hands of herself and also her countrywoman Marianne Holm. Her winner was Colm and Rose Hastings’ Old English Sheepdog Ch Lambluvs Sultry Secret, ‘Vickie’s’ second group of the week and ninth this year. Second was the Rough Collie, Carole and John Mulcahy’s Aus Ch Kazjs Dancin Inthestars.

Austrian Peter Berchtold was ring centre for group 2. His winner was Andrea Cleary’s Rottweiler Ch/GB Ch Cuchulain The Brave; almost eight years old, ‘Cooper’ was enjoying the circuit taking his first group placing of the year. The Boxer, Paul Keenan and Darren Griffin’s Ch Walkend Boy at Bessbox was in second spot

Christine Dunlap from the US was doing the honours for the terriers of group 3. Her winner was the Cairn, Marie Hogarty’s Ch Cadagio No Doubt About It. Runner-up was the Miniature Bull Terrier, Ch/GB Ch Grasco’s Honky Tonky, owned by Italian Moreno Scotton, and handled in Ireland and GB by Ger Cox.

Ann Christin Johansson from Finland judged group 4 and her best Dachshund was the Kaninchen Wire, Mary and Joe Allan and Mary Dick’s Ch/Gib/Mor Ch Auchans Come And Get Me Too. Caroline and Peter Wheatland’s Kaninchen Smooth Ch/Multi Ch Sunlux Angel Heartbreaker at Pinedax was in second place.

After judging BIS at Limerick, Noreen Harris was finishing her Irish judging stint at Tralee with group 6, and her winner was the Beagle, Serena Parker, Charlotte Norridge and Graham Stevens’ GB Ch Serenaker Figaro. She gave second to Ivor and Michelle Keelan’s Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Ch Afterglow Chunkey Monkey of Tejas.

American Ann Katona was judging group 7 and found her winner in Lyndsey Belcher’s Italian Spinone Sh Ch Netis Rock With You at Sosteli. Runner-up was ‘Loot’ the young Weimaraner, US import Northwoods Applebees Money Talks at Zilverein, owned by Jim and Karen Gibson in partnership with breeders Heidi Warren and Philip Palmer.

Local judge Josephine Glynn was judging group 8 for the first time and was delighted to see her winner, the Golden Retriever, Janette Filskov’s Sh Ch/GB Sh Ch/Dan/Int Ch Abinvale Traguardo, handled by Emma Archibald, go all the way to BIS. Runner-up was Catherine Halpin’s Welsh Springer Spaniel Moonlone Travelling Man.

Behind every successful show there has to be a band of workers, and Maudie Burke, Tralee secretary, is luckier than some with a great bunch of volunteers, not all doggy-oriented, led by Robert, the one on the left hiding behind the sign, who also stays up all night before the show making sure the venue is secure.
