NEWTOWNARDS '13 BEST IN SHOW
Noreen Clarke, popular secretary of Carlow and well known for her Icemist Samoyeds, was the Best in Show judge for Newtownards & District’s 9th Championship show. From the 10 group winners assembled, Noreen’s choice for top honours fell to Willie and Mandy Dobbin’s well known Newfoundland, Ch & GB Ch Brooklynbear Nijinsky, handled as always by William Jnr who has piloted him to many of his great successes. Reserve Best in Show went to Tom and Annie Mervyn’s German Short Haired Pointer, Sh Ch Karlivar Dusky Rose At Tomanipoint, group winner at South Tipperary this year and ‘Lucy’ was to go on a great run later in the year, starting with her Gb title a week later.

Topping the Champion Stakes under J.R.Walsh was Jean Cullen’s Dobermann, Ch Tuwos Impeccable, handled by co-breeder Josh Henderson.

Judging the Puppy Stakes class at Newtownards was John R Walsh, and his Puppy Stakes winner was Martin Skeffington’s 7 months old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, homebred Moystaff Buachaill.

Dutch judge, Jan De Gids judged Group 1, finding his winner in Colm and Rose Hastings’ Old English Sheepdog, Lambluv’s Sultry Secret, en route to BIS 3, with Emilio Castillo and Patrick Fortune’s Shetland Sheepdog, Irish Legend Of Navareem, taking second spot, a second group placing this year.

German judge, now domiciled in Switzerland, Barbara Muller, judged Group 2 and was delighted when her group winner, Willie and Mandy Dobbin’s Newfoundland, Ch & GB Ch Brooklynbear Nijinsky, handled by William Jnr, went on to Best in Show. Runnerup was Karen Fitzgerald’s Great Dane, Ch Lisvane Harlem Shuffle With Nerakdane.

Swedish judge, Cindy Pettersson was in charge of Group 3, and her top terrier saw a first group success for the Finnish imported Australian Silky Terrier, Kelly Lawless. Kevin Sharp Dixon and Jude Reyes’ Curiosity Love Affair, handled by Kelly, with in second place, Roy and Marion Gregg’s Airedale Terrier, Ch Bambusa Most Noble.

Andrea Callow judged the Dachshunds of Group 4, where her winner was Lesley Patton’s Standard Wire, Ch Bardings By The Way, a first group success of the year, with the runner-up position being filled by a delighted Rosie Danter with her Miniature Smooth, Demilee Moon Beam At Danterdax, another group newcomer.

Heading up Group 5 under Samoyed specialist, Joan Duffus, was Brian and Hazel Aherne’s American Akita, Ch Melador Kaygeebee, starting off on a great run over the following months with a first group victory of the year; in second place came Jimmy Hammond’s Samoyed, Ch Nikara Moonlight Dancer.

Topping Group 6 under Australian judge Molly Rule Steel was Barry O’Neill’s Basset Hound, Ch & GB Ch Knockogue Arthurs Legacy, who then went on to BIS 4 later in the day. Group second was awarded to Ivor and Michelle Keelan’s Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Ch Afterglow Chunkey Monkey With Tejas, his fourth group placing so far this year.

The eventual RBIS winning G.S.P. Tom and Annie Mervyn’s Sh Ch Karlivar Dusky Rose At Tomanipoint, was gundog specialist Sharon Pinkerton’s Group 7 winner and her second place rosette went to Aidan McKiernan’s English Setter, BIS winning Sh Ch Richecca Reach For The Skye, another top winner who was to go on to claim his GB crown shortly afterwards.

Serbian judge, Zlatko Jojkic judged Group 8 where his victor was the American Cocker Spaniel, the multi owned Beattie, McCarry-Beattie, Kelly-Pilgrim and Price’s Billymac Jaxson, a first group victory after group placings at both Celtic Winners and Combined International, with in second place Mary and Martin O’Donoghue’s puppy Labrador Retriever, homebred Philipstown Atlantic Breeze, at only 7 months on the day, another rising star for this very successful kennel.

Norwegian judge, Svein Helgensen, was centre ring for Group 9, finding his winner in Ashling Connolly’s Bichon Frise, Ch & GB Ch Ashmair Double Act, ‘Beau’ the BIS winner the previous weekend at Fermoy International and today winning his fourth group this year; G2 under Svein was James Newman and Sean Carroll’s Papillon, Ger Ch Denemore Seanus, the latest top winner from this world famous kennel.

Heading up the sighthounds in Group 10 under Molly Rule Steel was Willie and Joanne Mullen’s dual CC and BIS winning Irish Wolfhound, Ch Broughadowey Tir Eoghain, his third group win of the year after similar victories at Combined International and South Tipperary; in second place under Molly was Lucinda Thompson’s Whippet, Barnesmore Tigre Nero, a first group placing of the year.
