NEWTOWNARDS '15 BEST IN SHOW
Making the decisions in the BIS ring at Newtownards All Breed Championship show was Irishman Martin Falsey, a gundog aficionado who also judges all the hounds. From the ten group winners, Martin decided that his Best in Show winner was the Border Collie, Catriona O’Neill Caraher’s Sh Ch Huntly I Ain’t No Panda; just twentysix months old, she is a Junior Champion and was also Annual Champion 2014. ‘Panda’, who was also CJW and CW ’14, took 4th in Group 1 last year at both the IKC International day 1 and DDSS, and had earlier won the group under Shetland Sheepdog specialist, Ernie Smyth. Martin’s Reserve BIS winner was the Group 2 winner sent through by breed specialist, Ilona Onstenschenk from The Netherlands, John Francis’ CC winning Boxer bitch, Ch Rathbride Final Fantasy Jun Ch, who also has a UK group under her belt from SKC.

NEWTOWNARDS '15 BEST BABY PUPPY IN SHOW
As is now tradition at our Irish shows, we have classes for baby Puppy, from 4 – 6 months of age. All the Best Baby Puppies in breed compete for Best Baby Puppy in Show, this being chosen by the BIS judge, so Martin Falsey had a very pleasant task before his main duties, and, having seen them all briefly, he made a shortlist of four, from which he declared the Labrador Retriever, Martin and Mary O’Donoghue’s homebred bitch, Philipstown Lyrical, his winner; ‘Diva’ handled on the day by Martin. Runner up was the Parson Russell, Janine and Patrick Dooner’s Finnish import, Green Perry’s Scarlett O’Hara, handled by Janine.

Third placed Best Baby Puppy In Show chosed by BIS judge Martin Falsey was the Alaskan Malamute, Grainne Keeling’s homebred Kishdigra Criminal Intent.

Topping the Champion Stakes under Moira Grant Cook was the Papillon, James Newman and Sean Carroll’s Ch & Ger & Cz Int Ch Hundebuden’s Juno Pondabudens, handled by James. Runner-up was Joe Dempsey’s Old English Sheepdog bitch, Ch Bellablue Bewitched By Scallywag ‘Bubble’, handled as ever by Pia Dempsey.

Trevor Rodgers’ Japanese Shiba Inu, Ch & GB Ch Jiltrain Jack The Lad, topped the Veteran Stakes under Moira Grant Cook, handled by Janine Dooner. ‘Jack’ was a familiar winner in Ireland some years ago when he was a multiple group winner. Runner up was the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Sally Tonks and handler, Dione Fitzsimons’ Ch GB & Int Ch Shanlimore Maverick, ‘Darcy’ an all breeds BIS winner.

His winner was the eventual BIS winning Border Collie, Catriona O’Neill Caraher’s Sh Ch Huntly I Ain’t No Panda, with the Shetland Sheepdog, Emilio Castillo & Patrick Fortune’s import, Can Ch Grandgables Romantica, in second place.

Heading up Group 2 under Ilona Ostenk-Schenk was the Boxer, John Francis’ Ch Rathbride Final Fantasy, ‘Molly’ en route to Reserve Best in Show, with the Dogue De Bordeaux, Nial Walsh’s Ch Dar Og Swagger Jagger, reserve.

Christian Jouanchicot from Sweden of the ‘Out of Africa’ prefix was making a return visit to Newtownards and today was judging Group 3. He sent on to the BIS ring the West Highland White Terrier, Inge Flamang’s Magic Matisse Vom Maerchengarten, his first group. Living in Ireland with Jane Jenkins and prepared and handled by Ken Crockett. Runner up was the Smooth Fox Terrier, Ross Delmar and breeder Ewe Lunden’s Swe Nor DK Int Ch Residentsets Stand-in.

Andrea Callow, who judged at Crufts this year, was officiating in the Dachshund ring at Newtownards, and she found her Group 4 winner in Gerry McFaul’s Long Haired bitch, Ch & GB Ch Dachville Special Blend, ‘Jill’ way out in front on the GAIN Petfoods/Irish Canine Press/Dog World Group 4 Leaderboard, a position she has held for the last several years. Second placed was Karen Weir’s Smooth Haired Kaninchen, Magik Rainbow Gloria.

Ann Taggart judging Group 5, chose for her winner Liz Wogan’s Keeshond, Ch & GB Ch Neradmik Beach Boy avec Deminiac, who had several group placings last year; this was his first group for 2015. Joan Duffus was delighted to take Group 2nd with her young Samoyed, Russian import Radost Zhizni Arctic Light over Kynoch, handled by one of our leading young Junior Handlers, Scarlett Burnside.

Erodotos Neofytou, President of the Cyprus Kennel Club, adjudicated for Group 6 and he sent through as his winner the Basset Hound, Barry O’Neill’s Ch GB & Int Ch Knockogue Arthurs Legacy, with 7 Best in Show wins in his career, he is again top of the GAIN Petfoods/Irish Canine Press/Dog World Leaderboard, as he has been for the last three years. Runner-up was the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Ivor & Michelle Keelan’s Ch Afterglow Chunkey Monkey.

Ring centre for Group 7 was Carol Mulcahy, Australian resident and Rough Collie exhibitor for many years in Sydney and now living in Ireland. Her winner was the English Setter, Aidan McKiernan’s home bred Bushbane Celtic Feeling, ‘Tango’, who had earlier won her final Green Star for her Irish title under Carol. Second was the Pointer, Hookwood Peacemaker, owned by Stevie O’Brien, his Grandaughter, Fiona, and daughter, Stephanie, who handled ‘Dempsey’ to a first group placing today.

Viera Vitkova of the Flymystery American Cockers in Slovenia was ring centre for Group 8 and she chose for her winner Frank, Bette, and daughter Emma, Archibald Golden Retriever, Sh Ch Abinvale Mystic River, ‘Tegan’ taking her first Group this year. Runner-up was the Labrador Retriever, Justine Wylie’s 8 months old Loughbrae Argento; ‘Cody’ had earlier won his first Green star.

Jon Yek of the Pearlstone Pekingese in Ireland was running the rule over Group 9 and he decided that his best dog was the Tibetan Terrier, Cheryl Johnson’s GB Ch Sumanshu Hotter N’Hot at Khados, who took his sixth Green Star on the day. ‘Rutger’ will hopefully be back over to Ireland in the Summer seeking his seventh. In second place was Kevin and Lisa Croarkin’s French Bulldog, Ch Kingfriend Aprika Miss Wicked of Kesasonas.

Erodotos Neofytou judged Group 10 and his Sighthound winner was the Whippet, Collooney Fire Fly, owned by Jim Fletcher and Vivien Coulter, and handled by Jim. . Another new face to Group honours was the Borzoi, Walter Albert’s young Simply Infatuated With Zancuda, taking second place.
