Twelve months after taking the top spot at Munster Canine championship Show 2015, Diane Stewart-Ritchie’s Irish Setter Ch & GB Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper returned to the Cork Marts venue to defend his crown successfully on the Whitsun bank holiday weekend at the start of June. The BIS judge at Munster Canine was Donal Neally whose RBIS award went to Gillian Gibson and mother Carol’s Shih Tzu bitch Ch Virtulvilage Vain.

John Walsh Jnr was centre ring for the Stakes classes and topping the Puppy Stakes and qualifying for the Irish Pup of the Year final next Easter was the nine-month-old Borzoi, Ann Cuthbert and Stephen Minogue’s Donskoi Aspor, handled by Ann’s daughter Lynda Matthews. Runner-up was Wendy Fleming’s seven-month-old Pointer Glenariff Quintessential.

Topping the Champion Stakes under John Walsh was David McKenna’s Bouvier des Flandres Ch Nikolaev Tyrion At Davdeir, with the runner-up spot filled by Nicola Murphy’s Miniature Pinscher Ch Penmarlam Never Ending Love.
MUNSTER CANINE '16 VETERAN STAKES
John Walsh’s veteran stakes winner was Carla Bollard O’Callaghan’s Afghan Hound Ch, GB & Int Ch Ashahni Amir. Just turned eight years of age, ‘Caleb’ was making his debut among the seniors. Runner-up was Margaret McArdle’s nine-year-old Shetland Sheepdog Slievemac Spaceman.

Group 1 winner under Brenda Doyle was the Old English Sheepdog Ch & Int Ch Bellablue Bewitched By Scallywag, owned by Joe Dempsey and handled as ever by his wife Pia; ‘Bubble’ was BIS4 at Hibernian. Ann and Mervyn Webb’s UK import Sheltie Daisyway Skyrock of Milesend took the runner-up rosette.

Marie Butler was in charge for the working breeds of Group 2 where her winner was the Newfoundland, Gordon Cutts and Paddy Galvin’s GB Ch Kenamu Break The Mould Merrybear, handled by Paddy and bred in Ireland by Stephen Kinsella. Jean Cullen’s Dobermann Ch Tuwos Impeccable, bred and handled by Billy Henderson, took second spot.

Patrick Dooner judged Group 3 and chose the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Jimmy Byrnes’ Swedish import Dan, Nor & Sw Ch Sandstaffs Inkberry Holly, while Ross Delmar and Eva Lunden’s well known Smooth Fox Terrier Ch, Sw, Nor, Dan & Int Ch Residensets Stand-In was second.

Wal Westren judged the Dachshunds in Group 4 where his winner was Gerry McFaul’s Longhaired bitch Ch & GB Ch Dachville Special Blend, ‘Jill’ having topped the breed for the past four years and she has also been top Dachshund on the Gain Petfoods/Irish Canine Press/Dog World group Leaderboard for the past several years. Christine Bastable’s Miniature Smooth Ch Chrishanes Maxwell Edison MD, was in second place.

Amanda Sammon was ring centre for Group 5 and her decision gave a first group win for Darren and Elaine Walker’s Alaskan Malamute Ch Lueldar McGrath Trailblazer. Another taking a first group spot was the second-placed Siberian Husky Leorient Flying Solo, owned by Jimmy Duggan and handled by wife Anita.

Marie Butler was ring centre for Group 6 where her winner was Eamon Murray’s Beagle, Annavah Alpine, taking her first group with the runner-up spot taken by Barry O’Neill’s Basset Hound Ch, GB & Int Ch Knockogue Arthurs Legacy.

Topping Group 7 under judge Colm Hastings was the eventual BIS winner, Diane Stewart-Ritchie’s Irish Setter Sh Ch & GB Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper, with the runner-up spot filled by the Hungarian Vizsla, Alison Morton’s Mistyayre Fire Cracker For Andronja, handled today by Sinead Taggart.

Colm Hastings also judged group 8 where his winner was Ralph Dunne’s Clumber Spaniel Sh Ch & GB Sh Ch Richley Royale Bond. Runner-up was the American Cocker Spaniel, Colm Beattie’s Boduf Hope For Branstock.

Heading Group 9 under Jimmy McFarlane was the eventual RBIS winner, Gillian and Carol Gibson’s Shih Tzu Ch Virtulvilage Vain, with the runner-up spot filled by Sally and Sean Burns and Mary and Val Coghlan’s Standard Poodle, Ch Dinastii The Libertine Afterglow.

Mick Gavin judged Group 10, selecting as his winner the Afghan Hound, Lyn Appleby, John Minchin, Jayne Edwards and Mary Mulvaney’s Ch & Int Davashey To Tell The Truth, handled by Mary. Taking second spot was Gerry and Pauline Clarke’s Irish Wolfhound Ch Lady Rose of Shantamon.
