KILLARNEY '15 BEST IN SHOW
Tom and Annie Mervyn’s German Shorthaired Pointer, homebred Tomanipoint Celtic Knight, topped 1,464 dogs at Killarney on the Tuesday of the Irish Circuit. Just 16 months old, ‘Rory’, who is now old enough to claim his Ir Sh Ch title and has won his first CC, had earlier won his fourth group, his first coming at Fermoy International where he finished BIS4, then Sligo, followed by the IKC Summer Show where he took RBIS. Today he won the breed under Alberto Cuccillato from Italy, the group under Canadian Rita Walker, and the big rosette under Irish judge Eddie Patterson, who gave RBIS to Olive Taylor’s Chow Ch Chivas Royal Djalo at Taylorian; ‘Boris’ at just 21 months has now three group wins and was RBIS at Kilkenny in June. He had taken the breed under Portuguese Diogo Juiz Ramalho, and the group under Ireland’s Josie Foley.

Eddie Patterson’s best baby puppy in show at Killarney was Laura Huston’s Hustonia Enigma, four-month-old ‘Laura’ giving her proud owner a day to remember. Runner-up was Susan Arden’s five-month-old Beagle bitch Madika Spot On.

The stakes classes at Killarney were judged by Margaret O’Gorman and her puppy stakes winner, qualifying for Irish Pup of the Year next Easter, was Dione Fitzsimons’ imported Dobermann Sant Kreal My Dream Iz Fitzkin, nine-month-old ‘Kaos’ already with seven RGS and reserve BBPIS at Fermoy. Second place went to Debbie Evans-Barry’s Irish Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier Hobel As Time Goes By, nine-month-old ‘Hoban’ lightly shown but was RBBPIS at South Tipperary.

Topping the champion stakes under Margaret O’Gorman was Scarlett and Mark Burnside’s Alaskan Malamute Ch & Int Ch Libertia Reggae Master, ‘Marley’ moving up from fourth place at Clonmel, with second place going to Billy Henderson and Ciaran and Ann Marie Donnelly’s Dobermann Ch & GB Ch Tuwos Hrana, yet another bridesmaid’s spot for ‘Maebh’.

Margaret O’Gorman’s veteran stakes winner was Trevor Rodgers’ top winning Japanese Shiba Inu, nine-year-old Ch & GB Ch Jiltrain Jack The Lad, handled by Janine Dooner.

Heading up the brace stakes at Killarney under Margaret O’Gorman was Campbell McNabb’s Pointer pairing of Querdon Quaver and Shanandi Dark Shadow of Querdon.

Diogo Juiz Ramalho from Portugal judged group 1 finding his winner in Joe Dempsey’s Old English Sheepdog Ch Bellablue Bewitched by Scallywag, handled by wife Pia; ‘Bubble’ is a former Pup of the Year qualifier and was runner-up earlier in the year at Kilkenny. Second spot went to the Pembroke Corgi Multi Ch Nireno Making Mischief, owned by Kristina Kazlauskaite-Greseviciene from Lithuania.

Clinching the top spot in group 2 under Kenneth Chuah was Ashling Connolly and Paul Scanlon’s Miniature Schnauzer Ch Nujax Johnny Cash, repeating his group win at Clonmel, with the Bullmastiff, Seamus Magee and Lisa Sweeney’s Ch Bullmeredith Captain Rowlo of Tarbhore, taking the runner-up rosette. He was previously G2 at Sligo, G4 at Deise and third at Navan Group show.

Liz Nagle judged the terriers of group 3 where her winner was the Smooth Fox Terrier, Ross Delmar and Eve Lunden’s Ch/Sw/Norw/Dan/Int Ch Residentsets Stand-In, the Monkstown BIS winner, with Sean Knight’s Airedale Ch & Int Ch Mynight Maid Of The Mist taking second place.

Jennifer Cunningham’s Smooth Dachshund Ch Sontag Say The Word for Celandine, group winner at the IKC Summer show in July, topped group 4 under breed specialist Gopi Krishnan who awarded second place to Martin McDonnell’s Miniature Longhaired Smartdac Rising Phoenix, the Clonmel group winner.

It was another group 5 win for Olive Taylor’s Chow Ch Chivas Royal Djalo at Taylorian, this time under Josie Foley, ‘Boris’ going on to RBIS. Stephen Minogue’s Japanese Shiba Inu Ch Jiltrain Jackpott, the current Irish Pup of the Year winner and BIS at Hibernian, was runner-up.

Ring centre for group 6 was June Bollard and her winner was the Basset Fauve de Bretagne, Lesley and Roy Blevins’ Blevwil Ivan Idea, 11-month-old ‘Ivan’ winning his first group. In second spot was Ivor and Michelle Keelan’s Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Ch Afterglow Chunkey Monkey of Tejas, ‘Bruno’ the group winner this year at Kilkenny.

After a full day judging at Clonmel, Canadian Rita Walker had the chance to visit the sights of Killarney and judge as well, and in group 7 she found her best in Tom and Annie Mervyn’s German Shorthaired Pointer Tomanipoint Celtic Knight, who was to go on to clinch BIS. Next in line was the Italian Spinone, Paula Cozens’ Bannonbrigg Ralfie Rude at Ballydeen, ‘Marco’ a Dutch champion and today becoming an Irish Ch too.

Kenneth Chuah was back in the centre of the ring for group 8 and here his winner was Emma Bette and Frank Archibald’s Clonmel BIS-winning Golden Retriever ‘Tegan’, Sh Ch Abinvale Mystic River, with Sharon Henesey’s Flatcoated Retriever Swantonwood Lowry at Wrensmead, taking his second GS, runner-up.

The Boston Terrier, Paula Hamilton’s 17-month-old Spanish import from Bilbao, Basterberri Mermelada, took a first group victory winning group 9 under replacement judge Dick McCoy, who gave group 2 to the Papillon, Sean Carroll and James Newman’s Ch/Cz/Ger Ch Hundebuden’s Juno Pondabudens, group winner at Cork and also at Combined Canine international where he finished BIS3.

Group 10 was also judged by Dick McCoy and his winner was the Greyhound, Felicity Thompson’s Sobers Wrennah of Barnesmore, a first group win this year – she took her title at Coleraine the previous week. Runner-up was Emer Mooney’s Crufts CC-winning Deerhound Ch & Int Ch Rosslyn Quartet, group winner at Combined National and handled by Katie Kelly.

The sponsor Happy Dog had vet Carina Mederle on hand at the Circuit shows to give advice on the stand. After the show was over Carina took the opportunity to keep her agility dog up to scratch with a quick practice session, bags of Happy Dog proving to make an excellent jump.
