Making what is believed to be breed history in Australian Silky Terrier circles, Kelly Lawless piloted her Ch Curiosity Love Affair to the winner’s podium at Kilkenny & District Canine Club’s 39th All Breed Championship show. Bred in Finland by Mesdames Heinonen and Saa, 3 years old ‘Olly’ is co-owned by Kelly, Kevin Sharp Dixon and Jude Reyes. Today it was Carmel O’Riordan who put the icing on the cake for ‘Olly’. Carmel is one of our senior judges and today was making her farewell appearance centre ring; her choice for RBIS was the American Cocker Spaniel, the multi – owned Keenan, Nelson, Nelson and Bryant’s GB Sh Ch Nasilleen In The Buff, 2 ½ years old ‘Roudi’ has 12 CCs in the UK, including Crufts this year. The winners are pictured with BIS judge, Carmel O’Riordan and Stewart Carson representing sponsors, HAPPY DOG.

KILKENNY '13 BEST BABY PUPPY IN SHOW
IKC President, FCI All Breeds judge, Sean Delmar, judged Best Baby Puppy in Show, selecting from all the Best Bay Puppy in Breed winners (4 – 6 months old) and he chose as his BBPIS, Maureen Byrne and son James’ homebred Tibetan Terrier, Siddhartha Pearl Of Leon, 5 months old ‘Zena’ loving the limelight with RBBPIS going to a delighted Karen Rice handling Karen Cafferty’s 5 ½ month old Great Dane, ‘Jacob’, Zefather’s Simply The Best. Danny O’Neill represented sponsors, HAPPY DOG.
KILKENNY '13 CHAMPION STAKES
Heading up the Champion Stakes under John Bond was Emma, Bette and Frank Archibald’s Golden Retriever, Sh Ch Abinvale The Aviator, 3 year old ‘Denver’ a group winner at home in Ireland and also very successful in his forays across the water. In second spot was Sally and Sean Burns and Mary and Val Coghlan’s Standard Poodle, Ch Sarnia Magic Once More At Valentine.
KILKENNY '13 PUPPY STAKES
John Bond, judged the Puppy Stakes where his winner from the 46 entries was John and Ann Marie Madden’s 8 months old Kerry Blue Terrier bitch, Magradorm Medousa. Runner-up was Lynda Matthews and husband Colin’s 7 months old Whippet, Mossbawnhill In Hot Pursuit With Ailesbury.

John Bond’s winner of the Veteran Stakes was Lynda and Colin Matthews’ 8 year old Whippet, Ch, GB Ch & Int Ch Collooney He’s The One. In second place was Catherine Broaders’ Wire Fox Terrier, Ch Brookside Solo Of Brookdide.

Kilkenny’s Brace Stakes winners under John Bond were the Cocker Spaniels, Brian O’Sullivan’s Forestpine A Starry Dream To Cherish and Sh Ch Chavez Gaelic Connection At Forestpine, handled today by Brenda Pickering.

June Wall, popular Poodle and Rottweiler specialist, was centre ring for Group 1 where her winner was the eventual BIS 3 winning Shetland Sheepdog, Cathrina Dunne’s Longrange Scarlet O’Hara, with Kelly, Jean and Paul Lawless’ Schipperke, Ch, GB & Lux Ch Monterrez Jingle Belle For Hantreved, in second spot.

Australian, Lynn Butler, judged Group 2, finding his winner in Andrea Cleary’s Rottweiler, Ch Cuchulain The Brave, 6 year old ‘Cooper’ continuing his winning ways, with in second place Willie and Mandy Dobbin’s Newfoundland, Ch & GB Ch Brooklynbear Nijinsky, handled as always by son William.

Making his debut in Group 3, Martin Skeffington was delighted when his group winner, Kelly Lawless, Kevin Sharp Dixon and Jude Reyes' Australian Silky Terrier, Ch Curiosity Love Affair went on to Best in Show later in the day; Martin’s second place rosette was awarded to Ross Delmar’s top winning Smooth Fox Terrier, Ch & Int Ch Shillelagh Smooth Operator, the ICP/Connolly’s Red Mills Leaderboard winner in 2012.

Currently topping the Group 4 Leaderboard and winning her 3rd group this year was Gerry McFaul’s Standard Long Haired Dachshund, Ch & GB Ch Dachville Special Blend, ‘Jill’ keeping up her winning ways both at home and in the UK where she is also so successful; runner-up under group judge Oliver Noonan, who had judged all nine varieties, was the Emerson’s Smooth Haired, Hacienda Sir Fin The Net At Pachego.

Noel Beggs, taking a break from his successful handling duties, took centre stage for Group 5, finding his victor in Brian and Hazel Aherne’s American Akita, Ch Melodor Kaygeebe, 3 year old ‘Kay’ following on from her group victory at Swords two weeks back and earlier in the year at Newtownards. Noel’s choice for runner-up in this very diverse group went to Sean Carroll and James Newman’s well known and very successful Pomeranian, Ch, GB & Int Ch Belliver The Ultimate Creation, ‘Victoria’ a prolific group and BIS winner throughout her career.

Winning his eight group this year was Barry O’Neill’s Basset Hound, Ch & GB Ch Knockogue Arthurs Legacy; still only 3 years of age, ‘Arthur’ also has 3 Best in Show wins and 5 CCs under his belt. Group judge for Group 6 was Aussie, Lynn Butler, who chose for second place, Scottish visitors Diane and Phil Reid’s Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen puppy, Maudaxi Jimmy Choo, ‘Jimmy’ only a tender 8 months of age.

Heading up Group 7 under Australian judge, Carolyn Butler, was Tom and Ann Marie Mervyn’s top winning German Short Haired Pointer, Sh Ch & GB Sh Ch Karlivar Dusky Rose At Tomanipoint, just turned 3 years of age, ‘Lucy’ went on to BIS 4. Carolyn’s runner-up was Wendy Fleming’s Pointer, Sh Ch & Int Sh Ch Hookwood Dark Raven in Glenariff.

It was the RBIS winning American Cocker Spaniel, the Keenan, Nelson, Nelson and Bryant partnership’s GB Ch Nasailleen In The Buff, handled by Eamon Keenan, who topped the bill under group 8 debutante, Orlagh Murray, whose second place rosette went to Chris and Angela Hancock’s Labrador Retriever, Ch & Sh Ch Ballyhenry Hancourt Yeats.

Noel Beggs was back centre ring, this time for Group 9, finding his winner here in Flo Fahey & Joe Shire’s Lhasa Apso, GB Ch Dimera Top O’Th Morning, 4 year old ‘Ralph’ only at his 3rd show in Ireland after a successful career across the water where he holds 4CCs and today taking his second Green Star. Noel’s second place winner was Maureen and Alan Miles’ Bichon Frise, Hylacer Just One Look At Alareen.
KILKENNY '13 GROUP 10
Diane Stewart-Ritchie, well known for her Gwendariff Irish Setters, was the judge for Group 10. Diane’s winner was Carla Bollard O’Callaghan’s Afghan Hound, Ch & GB Ch Ashahni Amir, with Walter Albert’s Borzoi, Scheztaya Trans-Europe Express, in second place.

The overall winner of the three Junior Handling classes as the talented Nadine Bermingham, Top Junior in 2012, today collecting another ‘Best’ rosette from judge, Séan Delmar.

This year, as ever, the Kilkenny committee add those small extra touches which makes their show one of those in the ‘top league’, like the photographic area for all their stakes, groups and BIS, this year bedecked with plants and flowers (as was the BIS ring) grown and provided by Aaron Maher, son of well known St Bernard and Griffon exhibitor Caroline Maher, ‘Rathleague’, who has developed his own garden centre at the family home near Portlaoise.
