IRISH LADIES KENNEL ASSOCIATION '13 BEST IN SHOW
Making his debut in the Best in Show ring was Billy Blount and to great applause from the ringside, awarded Best in Show to David and Jackie Benson’s BMD, Ch & GB Ch Patrick De La Galea At Bernervalley, a second such award for ‘Patrick’ as he had also been BIS at South Tipperary on the mini-circuit at the start of May. Reserve BIS was awarded to the American Cocker Spaniel, partnership owned by Keenan, Nelson, Nelson and Bryant, GB Sh Ch Nasailleen In The Buff, handled by Eamon Keenan, ‘Roudi’ on a great run as he was the group winner and RBIS at Kilkenny a few weeks earlier.

ILKA '13 CHAMPION STAKES
Heading up the Champions in the Champion Stakes was Jennifer Garry’s Samoyed, Ch Blueagean Oracle of Apollo, 2½ year old ‘Skotia’ the RBIS winner at Cloghran 2011 as a youngster, has 1 CC and 2 RCCs across the water. Runner-up was Joanne & Theresa Lynch’s American Cocker Spaniel, Am Ch Silverhall Skyes the Limit, handled by Joanne.
ILKA '13 PUPPY STAKES
The Puppy Stakes class was in the hands of Heather Cox, BIS judge at the Ladies last year, and her winner was Breda Ingle and Gearoid Clarke’s Great Dane, Clonallan Bolt Of Raistin. In second place was Janine and Patrick Dooner’s Parson Russell Terrier, homebred Jappatin Charlie Fox.

In the Veteran Stakes it was another win for Lynda and Colin Matthews’ Whippet, Ch, GB & Int Ch Collooney He’s The One; Heather Cox’s runner-up was Lindsay Belcher’s Italian Spinone, Sh Ch & Int Sh Ch Sosteli Santana.

Collie specialist Paul Battigan judged Group 1, awarding the top spot to Colm and Rose Hastings’ Old English Sheepdog, Ch Lambluv’s Sultry Secret, her 4th group of the year, taking her to the top of the ICP/Connolly’s Red Mills Group 1 Winners Leaderboard. Paul’s runner-up was Frances Toman’s Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Ch Whitepoint Stare If You Dare at Manto.

Gundog specialist, John O’Gorman, must have been delighted to see his Group 2 winner, David and Jackie Benson’s BMD, Ch & GB Ch Patrick De La Galea at Bernervalley, go on to Best in Show later in the day; John’s runner-up rosette went to John Francis’ Boxer, Rathbride Final Fantasy.

Terrier specialist, Fionnuala Malone, was centre ring for Group 3, choosing for her winner the Australian Silky Terrier, Ch Curiosity Love Affair, owned and show by Kelly Lawless in partnership with Kevin Sharp Dixon and Jude Reyes. 3 year old ‘Olly’ was recently BIS at Kilkenny. Fionnuala’s runner-up spot went to Cara Davani’s Kerry Blue Terrier, Kebulak Kiss This, 2 year old ‘Romeo’ was handled by Cathy Neill and has just come to Ireland from England where he sits on 2 CCs and the RCC from Crufts.

Hound specialist Janet Duke judged all the Dachshunds and in the group it was victory for Christine Bastable’s homebred Miniature Smooth, Chrishanes Maxwell Edison MD. Reserve under Janet was Benita Morrison’s Miniature Wire Haired, Ch Benzden Armani.

Lyn Appleby, well known for her top winning Afghan Hounds both here and across the water, was making her progressing debut in Group 5, finding as her winner, Sean Carroll and James Newman’s Pomeranian, Ch, GB & Int Ch Belliver The Ultimate Creation, who then went on to BIS 4 later in the day; in second place under Lyn was Liz Wogan with her Keeshond, Neradmik Beach Boy Avec Deminiac.

Topping Group 6 under Janet Duke was Eddie and Gail Patterson’s Rhodesian Ridgeback, homebred Ch Rocksham Kimweri; in second spot under Janet was Barry O’Neill’s top winning Basset Hound, Ch & GB Ch Knockogue Arthurs Legacy.

John O’Gorman also judged Group 7 where he could find nothing to lower the colours of the top winning G.S.P; Tom and Annie Mervyn’s Sh Ch & GB Sh Ch Karlivar Dusky Rose At Tomanipoint, ‘Lucy’ en route to BIS 3, whilst in second place came Sinead Taggart’s Hungarian Vizsla, Bitcon Card Tricks For Cooley.

Heading up Group 8 under Heather Arrell, before going on to RBIS, was the American Cocker Spaniel ‘Roudi’, Keenan, Nelson, Nelson and Bryant’s GB Sh Ch Nasaillein In The Buff, with second place in the group going to Jessica Pretty and Paul Carpenter’s Cocker Spaniel, GB Sh Ch Joaldy Mandolin Wind.

Another debutante judge, this time in Group 9 where Eva Keenan took pride of place; her winner was another group success for Ashing Connolly’s Bichon Frise, Ch & GB Ch Ashmair Double Act. Runner-up under Eva was Yvonne Cannon and mother, Bernie Ladd’s Shih Tzu, Ch Cloughlea Dare To Believe.

Janet Duke judged her third group of the day, Group 10, and here her winner was Emer Mooney’s Deerhound, Ch Rosslyn Quartet, handled by Katie Kelly, Ireland’s Junior Handler last year at Crufts. Taking the reserve spot under Janet was Albert Ritchie’s Whippet, Demerlay Armabay Billie Jean.

Cloghran was bathed in summer sunshine, and at the ILKA, many of the larger breeds were judged outside in the grounds, where exhibitors got a chance to top up their tan.
