Best in Show on day 1 under terrier specialist and IKC Life member, John O’Hanlon, was Lynda Cuthbert Matthews and Don Foran’s Whippet, Ch Courthill Catch A Shadow, bred by Patsy Gilmore and Roger Stock. ‘Ester’ was top Whippet puppy in the UK in 2011, a Pro Plan Dog World POTY qualifier with a Res CC from Southern Counties from Puppy. She has now two CCs, including Crufts ’12, and 2 RCCs. Reserve BIS was awarded to Jackie and Andrea Stubbs & Mossy Keane’s Rottweiler, Ch Cotarrin Fright Night, recently BIS 3 at Bangor, this was a second group victory this year for ‘Tyson’.

From all the Best Baby Puppy in Breed winners, John O’Hanlon chose as his winner, Marianne Dunne’s homebred Jack Russell Terrier, Krisbos Franklin, with the runner-up spot occupied by Marie Hogarty’ Cairn Terrier, Cherrycrack Birdsong, both these young starlets under 6 months old..

Best Puppy in Show under John O’Hanlon, selected from the 10 puppy group winners, was Ruth Byers’ Golden Retriever, homebred Balibeau Commander In Chief, handled by Orlagh Murray, with runner-up going to Andy and June Cairns’ Dobermann, Dronski’s Bang Tidy, handled by Josh Henderson.

Best Veteran in Show under John O’Hanlon, selected from all the Beat Veteran in Breed winners, was Lynda and Colin Matthews’ Whippet, Ch, GB & Int Ch Collooney He’s The One, ‘Brad’ handled on this occasion by Stephen Thomas, with Una Rigney’s Kerry Blue Terrier, Ch & GB Ch Misty Blue Dawn At Arigna, runner up; these two ’golden oldies’ currently vying for top spot on the IRISH CANINE PRESS/ROYAL CANIN Veteran Leaderboard for 2013.

Topping the Champion Stakes under Rodney McDowell was Lynda and Colin Matthews’ Whippet, Ch, GB & Int Ch Collooney He’s The One, ‘Brad’ having a day to remember as he not only went on to win Best Veteran in Show, his daughter ‘Ester’ finished up Best in Show. Runner-up was Orlaith Keenan’s Medium Poodle, Ch Xavano Intimately Yours At Sleepybrook.

Taking centre stage for the Puppy Stakes was Rodney McDowell, another of Ireland’s globetrotting international judges, and his Junior Stakes winner was ‘Nancy’, June Wall & husband Noel Beggs’ 7 months old French Bulldog, Clisson Irma La Douce, with runner–up spot awarded to Carla Bollard O’Callaghan’s Afghan Hound, Ashahni Celtic Fire.

Heading up Group 1 under Danish judge Svend Lovenkjaer was Alan and Sarah Matthews’ Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Ch, GB & Int Ch Craigycor Viva La Diva, BIS winner at Combined International at Easter and again at Monkstown, ‘Erin’ went on to BIS 4 today; runner-up was Paul, Jean and Kelly Lawless’ BSD Groenendael, homebred Revloch Figo, 10 months old but already with 2 CCs to his name.

Norwegian judge Leif Herman Wilberg’s group 2 winner, Jackie and Andrea Stubbs & Maurice Lenihan’s Rottweiler, Ch Cotarrin Fright Night, went on to Reserve Best in Show, whilst Leif’s choice for second place fell to Sally and Howard Tonks’ Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Ch, GB & Int Ch Shanlimore Maverick, handled by Dione Fitzsimons, who handled ‘Darcy’ to BIS last year at Carlow.

Winning Group 3 under Serbian judge, Goran Gladic was Ross Delmar’s Smooth Fox Terrier, Ch & Int Ch Shillelagh Smooth Operator, ‘Balloo’ on his way to BIS 3. In second place was Ann Taggart’s West Highland White Terrier, Ch Cooley Double The Trouble, handled by daughter Sinead.

The Dachshunds of Group 4 were judged by Spanish judge, Enrique Mate-Duran, whose group winner was Christine Bastable’s Smooth Haired Kaninchen, homebred Chrishane Luvs Lottie The Hottie, with Gerry McFaul’s Standard Long Haired, Dachville Exotic Blend, the group winner at Carlow a few weeks earlier, Group 2nd.

Topping Group 5 under Portuguese judge Rui Olivera was Brian and Hazel Aherne’s American Akita, Ch Melodor Kaybeebe, 4 year old ‘Kay’ on a roll at the moment, today being her 5th group victory of the year and second in a row after Carlow where she was Reserve Best in Show; in second spot under Rui was another of the year’s top winners, James Newman & Sean Carroll’s Pomeranian, Ch , GB & Int Ch Belliver The Ultimate Creation, RBIS at both Clonmel and Killarney on the Circuit.

Carol Mulcahy , recently settled back home in Ireland after many years living in Australia, judged Group 6, selecting Ivor and Michelle Keelan’s Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Ch Afterglow Chunkey Monkey At Tejas, as her winner. Second place was the Basset Hound, Barry O’Neill’s top winning Ch & GB Ch Knockogue Arthurs Legacy, ‘Arthur’ the runaway winner of the G6 Leaderboard with his 15 group victories this year.

Colm Beattie was centre ring for Group 7, finding his winner in Liam Cahill’s 17 months old ‘Alex’, Currowhill Grey Guy Runner-up under Colm was the Hungarian Vizsla, Sinead Taggart’s Bitcon Card Tricks For Cooley.

Beata Petkevica from Latvia judged Group 8 where her winner was the Douglas family’s Labrador Retriever, Ramsayville Raise Anchor At Talard, handled by daughter Tracy, while into second place came John and Margaret Baldwin’s Cocker Spaniel, Sh Ch Kilivory Derby Lad.

Heading up Group 9 under Philomena Leonard, successful exhibitor in Shih Tzu and Tibetan Spaniels, was Eamon and Annette Owens’ Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, 4 years old ‘Rupert’ Ch Menota Boogie Woogie, with in second spot, Dermot and Georgina Alford’s Tibetan Terrier, Ch Christate How U Doin.

The Best Irish Native Breed in Show, judged by Irish Glen of Imaal aficionado Nicky White, was Marion, Tim and Ian Finney’s Irish Wolfhound, Ch Gulliagh Aramis, homebred and with 2 CCs under his belt after the recent Belfast weekend where he won at both the club show and Belfast Ch show.
