Taking centre stage in the Best in Show ring at Fermoy was Willie Dobbin and from the ten group winners sent through by the international panel of judges, he chose as his winner the Kerry Blue Terrier, Richard Dalton, Philip O’Brien and Jarka Poulova’s Ch Dalstar Il Divo, who had progressed through both the breed and the group under breed specialist Geoff Whitfield from New Zealand. Taking Reserve BIS under Willie was Ann Ingram and Kay Ryan, Marlies Morzik, Lisa Nelson & Leanne Bryant’s apricot Toy Poodle, Ch Tirkane La Vie En Rose, 20 months old ‘Livie’ handled to success by Ann.

Heading up the Champion Stakes under Margaret O’Sullivan was Austin and Ann Long Doyle’s BIS winning St Bernard, Ch, Lux Ch & Int Ch Il Divo Roly By Longsdyle, with second place going to Ciaran & Ann-Marie Donnelly and Billy & Josh Henderson’s Dobermann, Ch & GB Ch Tuwos Hrana.

Topping Group 1 under all breeds judge, Theo Horchner, of the Stegaree Boxer kennels in Australia, was the Australian Shepherd Dog, Tracey Douglas, Neil Allan and Robert Harlow’s Ch Am Gr Ch & Lux Ch Bayshore Stonehaven Cat Burglar, handled by Tracey to finish BIS 3. Paul, Jean and Kelly Lawless’ BSD Groenendael, Ch & GB Ch Revloch Figo was in second place, handled as usual by Paul.

All the puppy groups were judged by Margaret O’Sullivan and the winner of Puppy Group 1 and eventual Best Puppy in Show, was Grainne Keeling’s Shetland Sheepdog, Fearnach Show Me Heaven In Kishdigra, handled by her dad Kieran, with 2nd to Ben and Caroline Ford’s Old English Sheepdog, Brinkley Beautiful Dreamer of Clenmaen, 7 months old ‘Hollie’ handled by Ben at her first show.

Arthur Finnan was ring centre for Group 2 where he found his winner in Stephen Kinsella’s Newfoundland, Kenamu Crack Me Up; two years old ‘Jack’ at just his fourth show. Runner up here was the Harlequin Great Dane, newly crowned Champion on the day, John R and Mary Walsh’s Yandamar Inspector of Magic; three year old ‘Specs’ was taking his first group placing.

Winner of Puppy Group 2 was Brenda Groves and Steve Hare’s Boxer, Moydrum El Conquistador, who finished BPIS 3, with Tracy Shelly’s 6 months old Shar Pei, Loupei’s Satisfy Your Soul taking second place.

New Zealander Geoff Whitfield, was in charge of Group 3 and it was he who sent through Richard Dalton, Jarka Poulova and Philip O’Brien’s Kerry, Ch Dalstar Il Divo, on his way to BIS later in the day. The Scottish Terrier, Ch Slievecroob Scotch Piper, owned and bred by Clifford and Eileen Aiken and handled by son, Christopher, took second spot.

Topping the Dachshunds of Group 4 under specialist judge, Alfredo Alessandri, from Italy, was Martin McDonnell’s Miniature Long Haired bitch, Ch Smartdac She’s The One; winning her first group today. Second placed was Gerry McFaul’s Long Haired, Ch & GB Ch Dachville Special Blend.

Martin Croeser from South Africa made the decisions in Group 5 and he found his winner in the American Akita, Dave and Jenny Killilea and Arleen Clure’s Dem-Be’s The Aye’s Have It, eighteen months old ‘Sailor’, an import from America was handled by Bobby Browne. James Newman and Sean Carroll’s Pomeranian, Ch Sueacres Unexpected Kisses, took the 2nd place.

Heading up Puppy Group 5 was Maria & Ray Weafer, Matthew Bostock and Janet Armstrong’s American Akita, Mamarou Interstellar, 7 months old ‘Astro’ was handled by Maria. Runner-up was Maureen & Brian Carroll’s 8 months old American import Keeshond, Cedarhills Shamrock Foreign Correspondent Lyntova.

Tuula Savolainen, a hound specialist from Finland, judged Group 6, deciding that her winner was the Beagle, Eamon Murray’s homebred Heathergrove Caravola. Visiting from Scotland, Colin and Ann Mackey’s Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen, 3 year old Gairside Ferdinand took Group 2nd.

The eight months old Basset Fauve De Bretagne, Dunlop’s Blevwils Heart Stealer was the Puppy Group 6 winner, with Lesley & Roy Blevins’ 8 months old Basset Hound, Blevwil Kiss And Tell in second place.

Group 7 was judged by gundog specialist, Wil Hochstenbach from The Netherlands and his choice was Tom and Annie Mervyn’s German Shorthaired Pointer, Tomanipoint Celtic Knight, this 13 month old finishing BIS 4 later in the day. In the runner up spot was the Pointer, Colette & Roger Perkins’ Sh Ch Kanix Fate of Brent. He is currently top of Group 7 on the GAIN PETFOODS/Irish Canine Press/Dog World Topdog Leaderboard.

Hans Boelaars from The Netherlands was overseeing the Spaniels and Retrievers of Group 8 which had been judged by fellow countryman, Will Hochstenbach and his winner was Orla Murray’s Golden Retriever, Sh Ch Rathcloon Peaches N Cream. In second place was Chris and Hilary Laverty’s blue roan Cocker Spaniel, Sh Ch Laveris Watchme.

Laura Huston’s homebred Cocker Spaniel, Hustonia Casablanca, was the winner of Puppy Group 8. In second place was Penny Carpini and Ann Dempsey’s 6 months old Labrador Retriever, Carpenny Verona At Dromtacker.

Judge for Group 9 was Bill Browne Cole and his winner was the eventual Reserve Best in Show winning Toy Poodle, Ch Tirkane La Vie En Rose, owned by the winning partnership of breeders Ann Ingram and Kay Ryan, with Marlies Morzil, Lisa Nelson and Leanne Bryant. Cheryl Johnson handled her Tibetan Terrier, GB Ch Sumanshu Hotter N’ Hot at Khados, to take 2nd spot.

Heading up Group 10 under all breeds judge, Javinder Singh Pawar, from India, was the Irish Wolfhound, Petra Tomasovicova’s Ch Bloody Mary Tullamore Good Stuff. Carla Bollard O’Callaghan piloted her top winning Afghan Hound, Ch, GB & Int Ch Ashahni Amir, to take the 2nd rosette.

Fermoy were celebrating their 40th Anniversary and a special cake was commissioned and provided by Chairman, Stephen Hourihan’s wife, Geraldine. It was housed in the Secretary’s office during the day before the official ‘cutting’ and here the Show Manager, Kevin Croarkin, and Show Secretary, Marshall Craig, look like they would love to take an early slice!!
