Topping the Champion Stakes at IKC Celtic Winners under Sean Delmar was the Afghan Hound, Lyn Appleby, John Minchin, Jayne Edwards and Mary Mulvaney’s BIS winning Ch & Int Ch Davashey To Tell The Truth, qualifying for the Champion of Champions Final next January to defend the title he won this year; runner-up under Sean was Sally Burns, Mary Coghlan and Lesley Howard’s Toy Poodle, Ch Grayco Splash The Cash. Best Veteran in Show under Ann Cuthbert was Pamela and Ryan Hunter’s 9 year old Whippet, Ch, GB & Int Ch Mossbawnhill It’s All About Me, runner-up last year on the ROYAL CANIN/Irish Canine Press Veteran Leaderboard, with RBVIS awarded to Trevor Rodgers’ 9 year old Japanese Shiba Inu, Ch & GB Ch Jiltrain Jack The Lad, handled by Janine Dooner, who had finished in fourth place on the Leaderboard last year. John J Walsh, not too long back from a judging stint at Westminster, was in charge of the Group 2 breeds and from al the BOBs he selected for his winner the Bullmastiff, Seamus Magee and Lisa Sweeney’s BIS winning Ch Bullmeredith Captain Rowlo of Tarbhore, ‘Gus’ having put the breed on the map recently, taking two all-breed BIS wins last year at Tralee and IKC Int 2, with several other group wins. Tony Winston and Paula Thornton’s Boxer, homebred Benton Track Back, took a first group placing with the 2nd rosette here.

Taking the rosette for 2nd spot was the Wire Fox Terrier from the well-known Blackdale stable, Harry O’Donoghue’s Blackdale Starboard.

Gerry McFaul’s Long Haired Dachshund, multi group and CC winning Ch & GB Ch Dachville Special Blend, fresh from her 12th CC at Crufts, who collected her crystal for topping the GAIN Petfood/Irish Canine Press/ Dog World Group 4 Leaderboard yet again, won Group 4 under Eamon Murray, well known for his winning Heathergrove Beagles, who gave Katie and Kerrie Kelly’s Miniature Wire, Ch Tete-A-Tete Diervilla Avec Kmai, second, another group placing to add to the two taken last year.

Una Rigney, of the well-known Arigna Kerry Blue Terriers, judged Group 5 where her winner was the Chow Chow, Olive Taylor’s Ch Chivas Royal Djalo at Taylorian, Reserve BIS last year at Kilkenny and Killarney and Group winner at Portadown. Second here was the Pomeranian, Sean Carroll and James Newman’s Pomeranian, GB & Phil Ch Canton Dreamkeeper at Lireva, a new winner for this successful duo.

Dubliner, Vincent O’Brien, took time off from his International travels to judge at the show and his Group 6 winner was the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Ivor and Michelle Keelan’s Ch & Int Ch Afterglow Chunkey Monkey of Tejas, ‘Bruno’ with a Group win last year at Kilkenny and a plethora of Group 2’s making him second top Group 6 for 2015. Vinny’s runner-up was Barry O’Neill’s homebred Basset Hound, Ch, GB & Int Ch Knockogue Arthurs Legacy, ‘Arthur’ now a legend in his breed with 21 group wins last year alone as well as several RBIS and BIS at South Tipperary.

Group 7 was in the hands of the Baysway Cocker Spaniel man, Bill McEntee, who chose for his winner the Italian Spinone, Sue and Sally Knowles and Irene Glen’s multi CC winning GB Sh Ch Afterglow Hashtag Scandal at Bessalone, handled by David Shields; ‘Siddly’ was the youngest GB Ch in the breed, at just 13 months old. Jo McLaine handled McQuillan’s Weimaraner, Sh Ch Cloudy Misty Over Ballygrooby, to take the second rosette, making a nice Scots double.

Ralph Dunne handled his homebred Clumber Spaniel, Sh Ch Richley Royale Bond, to win Group 8 under Diane Stewart-Ritchie, so well known for her Gwendariff Irish Setters. ‘Eldridge’ en route to BIS 4. Ivor and Michelle Keelan took another group rosette, this time with their American Cocker Spaniel, Sh Ch Bunnybois Brainstorm at Tejas, now just 18 months old, who won the Group and finished BIS 4 at Carlow last September.

Pauline Keegan, better known to us all as a Pekingese aficionado, was sorting out the large Group 9, where her winner was the eventual BIS winning Standard Poodle, Sally & Sean Burns and Val and Mary Coghlan’s Ch Dinastii The Libertine Afterglow, and she declared the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Sean Martin’s homebred Ch Glencross De Ja Vu, runner-up; ‘DJ’ recently Best in Show at Dublin Dog Show just after Christmas, and also Group winner & BIS 4 at ILKA.

A delighted Emer Mooney handled her Deerhound, Ch & Int Ch Roslyn Quarter, to take Group 10 under Una Rigney; ‘Elsie’ with 2 CCs including Crufts ’14, was Group winner at both Combined Canine last Easter and Tralee, on the Irish Circuit, was BIS at the Hound Show and also has a multitude of group placings. Runner-up went to the Saluki, Florence Fahy and Rev. Joe Shire’s Ch Shokran Aquila; three year old ‘Saoirse’ with several Group places last year and also BOB at Belfast Ch Show, was top Saluki bitch last year.

IKC CELTIC WINNER 2016 DOG OF THE YEAR PRESENTATION
Diane Stewart-Ritchie was presented with the IKC Dog of the Year trophy by IKC President, Sean Delmar. This award for her Irish Setter, Sh Ch & GB Sh Ch Gwendariff Whipersnapper, who sadly couldn’t be there on the day as Diane was judging. ‘Nillson’ not only is a multi CC winner in GB, but won his Irish award for his BIS and RBIS wins at home; Six Group wins, Best in Show at Munster Canine, Deise and Bray and Reserve BIS at IKC International 2, gave him the points to take the title and joint the elite of Irish showdogs with his name also now down in history on the trophy which goes back over the past thirty years.
