CELTIC WINNERS '12 BEST IN SHOW
Martin McDonnell's Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund, Ch Smartdac Dark N Designer, topped an entry of 1,460 breed exhibits when she won Best in Show at the Irish Kennel Club's traditional St Patrick's Day Celtic Winners Championship Show at the National Show Centre at Cloghran, under Philip Behan (Mingfield Chow Chows). Reserve BIS went to Morag, David & Ryan Connolly’s Weimaraner, Zilverein Got Me Mojo at Huntly, handled by Morag. Gain Pet Foods were the main sponsors of the show and they are represented here by John Fox.

CELTIC WINNERS '12 CHAMPION STAKES
Claire Anne Ahern, of the Pipistrelle Papillons, was the Stakes judge and she chose for her winner, Susan White’s Maltese, Ch Benatone Gold Jackpot. Runner-up, all the way from Slovakia, was Petra Tomasovicova’s Irish Wolfhound bitch, NL Ch, SK Ch & Int Ch Absolut Roan Inish Tullamore Good Stuff.

CELTIC WINNERS '12 JUNIOR STAKES
The Pet Plan Junior Stakes are always a popular addition to the IKC CW show, and in the event, the winner was the Dobermann Pinscher, Rosie O’Rourke and Billy and Josh Henderson’s Roszar Falbrav via Tuwos, handled to the top prize by Billy. Runner up went to Clodagh Fallon’s Pug, Clodana Sparks Will Fly. David Dunne and Tara McLeod represented Allianz, at the show.
CELTIC WINNERS '12 PUPPY STAKES
There was a total of 67 entered in the Puppy Stakes and for her winner, and the IKC CW POTY representative for Easter ’13, Claire Anne Ahern chose Jimmy Duggan’s Siberian Husky, Boxchon Am I Bovvered at Leorient, handled by wife, Anita Foley. Runner-up was Patsy & Wilma McDevitt’s Long Coat Chihuahua bitch, Brookhaven Believe N Berne at Keenaughts.

The first Veteran Stakes of the year saw a delighted Veronica Coutts handle her Wire Fox Terrier, Laurel Boy, to top honours under Claire Anne Ahern. Second was Lyn Appleby, John Minchin and Jane Edwards’ Afghan Hound, Ch Kazdanabad Karlo Rossi, handled by Mary Mulvaney.

Just before he made the final decisions at IKC CW 2012, BIS judge, Philip Behan, made the presentation for IKC Dog of the Year 2011, to James Newman and Séan Carroll, for their Papillon, Ch, GB, Ger, Slo, & Int Ch Denemore Iconsruben. IKC Chairman, Evelyn Hurley is also pictured.

Willie Dobbin judged Group 2. His winner was the Boxer from the Isle of Man, Gemma Anne Stockton’s GB Ch Emjaycee Country Yokel at Kiztok. Group 2nd went to the Ayrshire based Dobermann Pinscher, Marion Cairns’ Supeta’s Secret Wizard at Dronski, handled by Josh Henderson.

There was a special award for Best Irish Breed this year, judged by Jennifer Kealy (Kealdale Wheatens & Airedales) and from all the BOB winners in the native breeds, she chose as her top dog, Willie and Joanne Mullen’s Irish Wolfhound, Broughadowey Tir Eoghain Jun Ch. Runner up was the Kerry Blue bitch, Edbrios Dolce Vita Jun Ch, owned by Barbara Ferguson, and handled by breeder, Philip O’Brien.

There is always a well decorated Irish Breeds stand at the St Patrick’s Day Show, displaying old photographs and paintings, with antique memorabilia on Irish breeds. CELTIC WINNERS '12 Minority Breeds Cheque
Each year the proceeds of the Minority Breeds show and their auction, held at the show, goes to a chosen charity, and this year they were delighted to be able to hand over a cheque for €7,000, for Assistance Dogs for Children with Autism. Secretary, Cathy Delmar, IKC Treasurer, Joan Walsh, June Wall of the Green Star Committee and Colm Beattie, Chairman of the Green Star Committee hold the cheque, and are seen here with other members of the Minority Breeds committee, Junior Handling representatives, and a family who have found their black Labrador assistance dog a life saver for their son.

There was a great turn out for Agility at the IKC CW show, always popular with the general public too, but most of all with the dogs and their fit owners. These enthusiasts compete at most of the championship events, rain hail or shine, and happily this St Patrick’s Day, it was ‘shine’ if a little sharp as well.

Tara Fitzpatrick has given a pet home to ‘Ted’ who was the Dundalk track qualifier, who tragically lost his sight just a few weeks after the Dundalk qualifying show. However, as is obvious, Ted has a loving home for his retirement, so his story has a happy ending.

The Irish Kennel Club and the Irish Greyhound Board joined forces a while ago to promote the welfare of retired greyhounds, and during the year, at each course throughout Ireland, a ‘show’ heat took place for racing ‘veterans’ to compete for a place in the finals at the IKC Celtic Winners St Patrick’s Day show. 19 finalists were judged by Irish Wolfhound and hound specialist, John Kelly. Barry Coleman, Welfare Manager for the Irish Greyhound Board presents the trophy for the Retired Greyhound of the Year 2011, the Enniscorthy representative, Clearview Kelly, to his young owner/handler, Master Evan Flynn.
