COLERAINE '15 BEST IN SHOW
Taking centre stage to judge Best in Show at Coleraine’s first championship show was Bill Warke, long associated with both the area and also top winning dogs, especially his Glasvey Dachshunds, a fitting appointment. Having carefully assessed the ten group winners, his choice for Best in Show fell to Ashling Connolly’s Bichon Frise, Ch & GB Ch Ashmair Double Act, a first BIS win this year but no stranger to this accolade over the past few years. The IKC Dog of the Year 2013 and a POTY winner, 4 year old ‘Beau’ has been at the top since puppyhood and this year he was group winner at Banbridge where he was BIS 3, in the rain at Munster Canine, and then group and Reserve BIS at Bray. Reserve BIS at Coleraine was another top winner, Jimmy Duggan’s Siberian Husky, Ch, GB & Int Ch Bedarra Cold Paws Warm Heart For Leorient, handled as normal by Anita Foley-Duggan; 5 year old ’Flint’ and ‘Beau’ are old sparring partners, having been fighting it out at the top over the past few years, ‘Flint’ RBIS for the fourth time this year after similar successes at Munster Canine, Deise and more recently, Sligo, and like ‘Beau’, topping their respective GAIN Petfoods/Irish Canine Press/Dog World Top Winners Leaderboards.

COLERAINE '15 PUPPY STAKES
Gerry McFaul, well known for his Dachville top winning Dachshunds, was the Stakes judge at Coleraine’s first Championship show, starting with the Puppy Stakes where his winner was the Shih Tzu, Philomena and Paddy Leonard’s Nobel Merlot Poland, 10 months old ‘Alfie’ really on a roll, following on from his group win the previous week at Monkstown and today taking his 2nd Green Star later in the breed; in second place was Clodagh Fallon’s Papillon, Pipistrelle Little Buddha At Clodana, 8 months old ‘Buddy’ also with a green star in his locker and 4th in the puppy stakes at the IKC Summer show.

Chris Cathcart’s 14 months old Lhasa Apso, Owenavera Hard Candy At Cathderry, was Gerry McFaul’s Junior Stakes winner with Grainne Keeling’s Shetland Sheepdog, Fearnach Show Me Heaven In Kishdigra, handled by dad Kieran, in second place.

Topping the well filled Champion Stakes under Gerry McFaul was Carla Bollard O’Callaghan’s Afghan Hound, Ch, GB & Int Ch Ashahni Amir, 7 year old ‘Caleb’ the group winner this year at Cork and more recently, the IKC Summer show; taking second was Ray O’Neill’s latest Pekingese champion, Ch Trendylook Kennedy, the group winner at Combined National and with 7 group placings this year, in third place on the GAIN Petfoods/ICP/Dog World Leaderboard.

Heading up the Veteran stakes again was Sally Tonks and Dione Fitzsimons’ 9 year old Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Ch, GB & Int Ch Shanlimore Maverick; ‘Darcy’, handled by Howard Tonks, now forging ahead at the top of the ROYAL CANIN/Irish Canine Press Veteran Leaderboard.

Jennifer Kealy’s Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers, Ch Dalstar Giselle & Kealdale Nutmeg, handled by mum Susan, were Gerry McFaul’s Brace Stakes winners with O’Neill’s Smooth Haired Dachshunds, Thundergay Abilene & Ch Thundergay Due South, as runners-up.

June Wall’s Group 1 winner was Geraldine Mulrooney’s Old English Sheepdog, Ch Bellablue Fellabreda, one of a trio of champion siblings from this litter; 3 year old ‘Feile’ taking his second group of the year after similar success at the IKC Celtic Winners, again handled by Seamus Keane. Runner-up was Kelly, Jean and Paul Lawless’ BSD Groenendael, Ch & GB Ch Revloch Figo, the BIS winner recently at the IKC Summer show.

Noel Beggs judged Group 2, awarding top spot to Paul Scanlon and Ashling Connolly’s Miniature Schnauzer, Ch Nujax Johnny Cash, this win giving co-owner Ashling two finalists in the BIS ring; 2 year old ‘Cash’ the group winner this year at Hibernian and the BIS winner at Celtic Winners 2014. In second place was Thomas McCallion’s Bulldog, Ch Chelseapride Makalele; handled today by Stephen Minogue and a former POTY qualifier, he was taking a first group placing of the year.

The terriers in Group 3 were judged by Margaret O’Gorman whose winner was Michael Sineri’s Bull Terrier, Ch Cosmopolitan Space Oddity Moonflower, 3 year old ‘Georgio’ attending only his second show in Ireland and handled by Ger Cox who will be campaigning him; bred in Sicily, he won the world speciality at the recent world show. Runner-up was Ross Delmar and Ewa Lunden’s Smooth Fox Terrier, Multi Ch Residentsets Stand-In, the BIS winner at Monkstown the previous week.

Heading up the Dachshunds in Group 4 under Marion Sloan was Lesley Patton’s Standard Wire, Ch Lesandnic Lil Eetee, a first group win for ‘Elliott’; in second place was Jennifer Cunningham’s Smooth, Ch Sontag Say The Word For Celandine, group winner at IKC Summer Show.

The RBIS winning Siberian Husky, Jimmy Duggan’s Ch Bedarra Cold Paws Warm Heart For Leorient, was Olive Taylor’s Group 5 winner with second place going to Maureen and Brian Carroll’s Keeshond, Ch & Int Ch Arctic Kees Best Kept Secret, ‘Jackson’ the group winner at Swords and Monkstown.

Taking his second Group 6 win of the year was Louisa and Eddie Casey’s Dalmatian, Ch Buffreys Pop Goes The Weasel, ‘James’ the group winner at Bray; group judge Diane Stewart Ritchie’s runner-up was Barry O’Neill’s Basset Hound, Ch, GB & Int Ch Knockogue Arthurs Legacy, the South Tipperary BIS winner.

Stephanie Walsh’s Group 7 winner was Jim and Karen Gibson’s Weimaraner, Sh Ch Zilverein Oops I Forgot My Boots, who then went on to BIS3, with second place going to Stuart Cummings’ Pointer, Kanix Kroner At Sevenhills, 15 months old ‘Jensen’ the RBIS winner the previous week at Monkstown.

Catherine Collins judged Group 8, awarding top honours to Ciara Byrne and Aedin Stewart’s Golden Retriever, Sh Ch Zenevieva Mister Bojangles For Whistler, 4 year old ‘Clancy’ with a first group win, while Marianne Dunne’s Curly Coated Retriever, Sh Ch Krisbos Hopsy Daisy, group 4 at both the IKC Internationals last year, and again at Celtic Winners this year, took second place.

Mandy Dobbin, wife of Chairman, Willie, is renowned as a baker, and she produced a cake especially for their first show, which was cut and shared around with judges, with the press getting their share too!!
