Making his debut in the Best in Show ring was Mervyn Webb, who with wife Ann has had a lifetime love and interest awith major success in Rough Collies and Shetland Sheepdogs. From the ten group winners sent through to him, Mervyn’s choice for Best in Show at Clonmel 2013 was Billy and Josh Henderson’s Dobermann Pinscher, Ch & GB Ch Tuwos Halestorm; homebred 4 year old ‘Storm’. Reserve BIS under Mervyn was yet another of Ireland’s top winning dogs, Sean Carroll and James Newman’s Pomeranian, Ch, GB & Int Ch Belliver The Ultimate Creation, 5 year old ‘Victoria’ with a veritable string of successes along the way.

Heading up the Champion Stakes under Colm Hastings was Jimmy Duggan’s newly crowned Ch & GB Ch Bedarra Cold Paws Warm Heart For Leorient, fresh from gaining his 3rd CC at Bournemouth; second spot went to Sean Carroll & James Newman’s Pomeranian, Ch, GB & Int Ch Belliver The Ultimate Creation, who was to go on later to RBIS.

The Puppy Stakes class at Clonmel was in the capable hands of Colm Hastings, well known for his and wife Rose’s Raggletaggle OES, and going forward under Colm to the POTY Finals next Easter by winning the Puppy Stakes was Alan & Sarah Matthews’ Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Craigycor Such Fun.

Topping the parade of veterans in the Veteran Stakes under Colm Hastings was the Broaders family’s WFT, Ch Crystalwire Solo Of Brookside, handled by Catherine Broaders, with Michael Lawless’ Bouvier Des Flandres, Ch Lachlans X Facter, second.

Winning the Brace Stakes under Colm Hastings was the duo of Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers all the way from the Netherlands, Petra Erdmann’s homebred Ch Ballyhara’s Treasure From Trá Lí and her dam, Int Ger VDH & KFT Nl Bel Lux Ch Ballyhara’s Jewel of Tara.

Dick McCoy judged Group 1, awarding top honours to a recent newcomer to Ireland, John & Carol Mulcahy’s Rough Collie, Australian Supreme Ch Kazis Sir Spencer, all having moved to Ireland earlier this year from Sydney. 7½ year old ‘Spencer’ has only been shown here since July and was taking his first group win here. Runner-up under Dick was Alan & Sarah Matthews’ Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Ch, GB & Int Ch Craigycor Viva La Diva, fresh from her BIS victory at Monkstown at the start of the month.

Dick McCoy also officiated Group 2 where his winner was the eventual BIS winner, Billy & Josh Henderson’s Dobermann Pinscher, Ch & GB Ch Tuwos Halestorm, followed home by another top winner, Willy and Mandy Dobbin’s Newfoundland, Ch & GB Ch Brooklynbear Picasso.

Group 3 was assessed by Jean Westren of ‘Deanery’ fame, selecting Damian McDonald’s Australian Silky Terrier, Ch Curiosity Hit The Headline to top the terriers en route to BIS 4 later in the day. Taking second place here was Sean Knight’s Airedale Terrier, Ch & Int Ch Maid Of The Mist.

Alexa Brown judged all the Dachshunds, awarding the group to Circuit visitors from Devon, Rollinson’s Wire Haired, Nosinllor Artemis; runner-up was Gerry McFaul’s Long Haired, Ch & GB Ch Dachville Special Blend, keeping ‘Jill’ well ahead at the top of the ICP/Connolly’s Red Mills Leaderboard.

Winning Group 5 under Seamus Oates was Sean Carroll & James Newman’s Pomeranian, Ch, GB & Int Ch Belliver The Ultimate Creation, ‘Victoria’ on her way to RBIS, with Maureen & Brian Carroll’s Keeshond, Ch & Int Ch Arctic Kees Best Kept Secret, in second place.

M.A.Mesquita from Peru judged Group 6, finding his winner in Ivor & Michelle Keelan’s Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Ch Afterglow Chunkey Monkey, with Danny Gamble’s Dalmatian, Ch Cannabee Commander At Mullaboy in second place.

Guy Kips from Luxembourg was centre ring for Group 7 where he chose Cathy Loughlin and Katie Kelly’s Irish Setter, Sh Ch Rohanmor You Were Maid For Me, BIS winner earlier in the year at Munster Canine, to top the group with Jim and Karen Gibson’s Weimaraner, Sh Ch Zilverein Shabby Chic, taking a first group placing in the second slot.

Golden Retriever specialist Heather Morrison from Tasmania officiated Group 8 where her winner was the American Cocker Spaniel, the multi-owned Keelan, Nelson & Bryant’s GB Sh Ch Nasailleen In The Buff, RBIS at both Kilkenny and ILKA, with second place awarded to Frank, Betty and Emma Archibald’s Golden Retriever, Abinvale Mystic River, a first group placing this year.

Dermot Alford, well known with wife Cybel for their Christate Tibetan Terriers, was in charge of Group 9, choosing as his winner, Ashling Connolly’s Bichon Frise, Ch & Gb Ch Ashmair Double Act, who then went on to BIS 3; runner-up under Dermot was Philomena and Paddy Leonard’s Polish import Shih Tzu, Ch Ismail Merlot Poland For Plenard.

Centre ring for Group 10 was Australian All Breeds judge, Tabatha Buckley, on her second stint on her first Irish visit, having judged at Bangor, and was also officiating at Killarney, and her winner here was Gerry and Pauline Clarke’s Irish Wolfhound, Ch & Int Ch Roxanne Of Shantammon, winner of the IKC Top Dog competition back in February and will be off to represent Ireland at the Eukanuba Challenge in December. Runner-up under Tabatha was Maureen Wade’s Italian Greyhound, Ch Turigner Wind In The Willows, RBIS at Bangor and the BCC winner at Crufts this year.
