Topping the National Championship show with an entry of 1,547 dogs, was the American Cocker Spaniel Am Ch Silhouette Troubling Nasailleen with Mycalleys, 18-month-old ‘Trouble’ just imported from the US and owned by Lisa Nelson, who handled him, Leanne Bryant and Bev Morris, a great first show win in Ireland. Paul Lawless gave RBIS to the Smooth Kaninchen Dachshund bitch, Karen Weir’s Ch Magik Rainbow Gloria. Imported from Russia, she won six groups last year including the IKC international where she finished BIS3.

Best Baby Puppy In Show under Paul Lawless was Paula Hamilton’s five-monthold Boston Terrier Takaira Texan Town with reserve BBPIS going to Wendy Fleming’s Pointer, five-month-old Glenariff Quintessential, handled by sister Caroline Reynolds, both these dogs homebred.

Judging the stakes classes was Diane Stewart-Ritchie, well known for her Gwendariff Irish Setters and just back from a whirlwind trip which saw her take in the Pawscars and then on to a judging stint in Moscow. Topping the puppy stakes and winning her ticket to the host club’s Irish Pup of the Year final next Easter was Brenda and Joe Doyle’s Shetland Sheepdog Sevenoaks Penny Heaven, 11-month-old ‘Penny’ runner-up in the junior stakes the previous day. In second place was Colm Beattie’s ten-month-old American Cocker Spaniel Boduf Hope for Branstock.

Diane Stewart-Ritchie’s junior stakes winner was Marian and Stephen Cockerham’s Miniature Schnauzer Yakuza Heart On My Sleeve, 13-month-old ‘George’ only lightly shown. Runner-up was Martin Bailie and Jennifer Duggan’s 14-month-old Old English Sheepdog Aryakas Theron.

Runner-up was Jimmy Duggan’s Siberian Husky Ch, GB & Int Ch Bedarra Cold Paws Warm Heart for Leorient, ‘Flint’ handled as usual by wife Anita who has piloted him to so many top honours.

Pamela and Ryan Hunter’s Whippet Ch, GB & Int Ch Mossbawnhill It’s All Bout Me and Sally Tonks and Dione Fitzsimons’ Pyrenean Ch, GB & Int Ch Shanlimore Maverick renewed their friendly rivalry on the podium of the veteran stakes with the Whippet just edging out the PMD on this occasion; ‘Darcy’ the Pyrenean was overall winner last year on the Irish Canine Press/Royal Canin Veteran Leaderboard with ‘Pebble’ the Whippet runner-up.

Diane Stewart-Ritchie’s brace stakes winners were the Irish Setter pairing of Clanrua Lord Henry at Kilnacourt and Cataluna Peter Pan at Kilnacourt, owned by Marie Quinn and Fran McNamara, with Darren and Elaine Walker’s Alaskan Malamutes Lueldar Midnight Runner and Ch Lueldar Dixie Chick filling the runner-up slot.

Danish judge Tomas Rohlin did group 1 where his winner was Mandy Finnegan’s Shetland Sheepdog Fearnach Custom Mad for Lukinwolf, ‘Mika’ a Pup of the Year qualifier and the group winner last year at Portadown where she finished BIS4. In second place was Audrey McDonald’s Border Collie Sh Ch & GB Sh Ch Locheil Ooh La La, ‘Lola’ with ten CCs and two CACIBs.

Topping group 2 under Roberta Curran was William Dobbin’s Newfoundland Dreamkeepers Brooklynbear Shania, a former Northern Ireland Pup of the Year winner gaining her Irish title today and going on to finish her UK title the following week. Andrea Stubbs and Mossy Lenihan’s Rottweiler Ch & GB Ch Cotarinn Fright Night took second place for the second day in a row.

The terriers in group 3 were judged by Frenchwoman Sylvie Desserne whose winner, Ed and Philip O’Brien and Jarka Poulova’s Kerry Blue Edbrios Exotica, went on to BIS3. Leanne Alexander’s Cairn Terrier Stirlingview Shake The Dice was runner-up, ‘Herbie’ with a RCC to his name.

Heading the Dachshunds in group 4 under Leif Wilberg was Karen Weir’s Smooth Kaninchen Ch Magik Rainbow Gloria, who went on to RBIS. In second place was Martin McDonnell’s Longhaired Kaninchen Smartdac Arizona Flame.

Centre ring for group 5 was Maudie Burke who chose as her winner Craig Bannon and Niamh Carroll’s seven-year-old Akita Ch, Int & Am Ch Hoka Hey’s The Power And The Glory, annual champion for the last three years in the breed and a consistent winner in this group over the years. Second went to Jimmy Duggan’s Siberian Husky Ch Bedarra Cold Paws Warm Heart for Leorient, ‘Flint’ handled as usual by Anita, another top winner from this strong group.

Second today was Stuart and Heather Cummings’ Pointer Sh Ch Kanix Kroner At Sevenhills, RBIS last year at Monkstown.

It was the BIS 4-winning Pekingese Ch Pekehuis Midnight Magic who was Danish judge Kitty Sjong’s choice in group 9 with second place going to Ashling Connolly’s top winning Bichon Frisé Ch & GB Ch Ashmair Double Act, ‘Beau’ the winner of the trophy for topping group 9 on the Gain Petfoods/Irish Canine Press/Dog World Leaderboard 2015.

Colm Hastings was back centre ring for group 10 where his winner was Ann Cuthbert and Stephen Minogue’s Borzoi Ch & Int Ch Donskoi Asmodey, ‘Louie’ topping his breed from 2010 through to 2015 and topped the group 10 Gain Petfoods/Irish Canine Press/Dog World Leaderboard last year. In second place was Emer Mooney’s Deerhound Ch & Int Ch Rosslyn Quartet, ‘Elsie’s’ most recent group victory coming at IKC Celtic Winners the previous weekend.
