The world renowned Harry O’Donoghue, so well known for his Blackdale terriers, was judge elect for Best in Show at the Combined Canine Club International show where his eventual winner was Alan and Sarah Matthews’ Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Ch & GB Ch Craigycor Viva La Diva, 4 year old ‘Erin’, as her titles testify, a big winner both at home and across the water, and making a successful return to the ring after maternal duties. Harry’s choice for Reserve Best in Show fell to Willie and Joanne Mullen’s Irish Wolfhound, Ch Broughadowey Tir Eoghain, homebred ‘Cooper’ continuing his great run from 2012 when he was Best in Show at Tralee and also picked up 2 CCs along the way.

Harry O’Donoghue adjudicated Best Puppy in Show, selecting his winner from the all the Best Puppy in breeds, and coming out on top was Marion and Roy Gregg’s Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Dariant Louie Vencedor De Mi Soul At Bambusa, a great win for this Russian import and showcasing the breed to a wider audience; runner-up was Emilio Castillo and Patrick Fortune’s Shetland Sheepdog, Richmaus Perfect Picture Of Navarrem.

Best Veteran in Show at Combined Canine was Una Rigney’s Kerry Blue Terrier, Ch & GB Ch Misty Blue Dawn At Arigna; Harry O’Donoghue awarded the runner-up rosette to Lesley Hipgrave’s English Springer Spaniel, Sh Ch Ternspringer Pretty Paper.

Stephanie Walsh, well known for her Shih Tzus and American Cocker Spaniels, took charge of the Stakes classes at Combined and her winner of the Champion Stakes was Flo Fahey and Joe Shire’s Lhasa Apso, the recent arrival at the Bentarsna kennels, GB Ch Dimera Top ‘O’ The Mornin, 4 year old ‘Ralph’ with 4 CCs gained in the UK; in second place was Tom and Annie Mervyn’s G.S.H.P., ‘Lucy’,Sh Ch Karlivar Dusky Rose At Tomanipoint.

Danish judge, Charlotte Hoier was centre ring for Group 1 and it was her winner, Alan and Sarah Matthews’ Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Ch & GB Ch Craigycor Viva La Diva, who went on to Best in Show later in the day; runner-up under Charlotte was Clare Burnett’s Bouvier Des Flandres, Multi Ch Karma Mon Cher Z Flandry Jskiego Gniazda.

Popular Portuguese All Rounder, Luis Pinto Teixeira was judge elect for Group 2, finding his winner in Billy and Josh Henderson’s Dobermann Pinscher, Tuwos Halestorm, ‘Storm’, who recently gained his GB title at the South Eastern Club show, was the group winner at Bangor and Bull Breeds last year. Runner-up was English visitors, Ian and Yvonne Baverstock’s Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Ch Kalkasi In High Spirits.

Dr Milivoje Urosevic from Serbia judged Group 3 where his winner was McEvoy & Johnston, Poulova & O’Brien’s, Kerry Blue Terrier, Edbrios Status, handled by Philip O’Brien, a first group victory; in second place came Ann White’s Irish Glen of Imaal, Ch Abberann Karl handled by husband Nicky, he had 7 group placings last year and finished 4th overall on the ICP/Connolly’s Red Mills Leaderboard for Group 3.

Julie and Anthony Emerson’s Smooth Dachshund, Hacienda Sur Fin The Net, took a first group under Portuguese judge, Manuel Borges, whose 2nd spot went to Trevor Castles’ Miniature Smooth, Seltsac Angel Delight.

John Madden was in charge of Group 5, sending on to the BIS ring, Maureen and Brian Carroll’s, Lyntova Legend Has It, a first group victory for the 18 months old Keeshond; runner-up was last year’s top dog on the Group 5 Leaderboard, the BIS winning Siberian Husky, Jimmy Duggan’s Ch Bedarra Cold Paws Warm Heart For Leorient, handled as usual by wife Anita.

The BIS 3 winner, Barry O’Neill and Sandra Stack’s Basset Hound, Ch & GB Ch Knockogue Arthurs Legacy was Seamus Oates' winner of Group 6, with the reserve placing going to Danny Gamble’s Dalmatian, Cannabee Commander At Mullabuoy, a favourite show obviously as he was third in the group here last year.

Heading up Group 7 under Spanish judge, Francisco Ruiz Rodriguez, was Aidan McKiernan’s English Setter, Sh Ch Richecca Reach For The Skye, BIS winner at South Tipperary and Bangor last year, starting 2013 in style with successive group wins and his GB title to follow a few weeks later. Second place in the group went to David and Morag Connolly’s Weimaraner, Sh Ch Zilverein Got Me Mojo At Huntly, RBIS winner at Celtic Winners 2012 and group winner at Limerick.

Claire Ivers’ Labrador Retriever, Rocheby Fairy Gold, was Luis Pinto Teixeira’s winner of Group 8, a first group placing for this precocious 11 months old bitch. In second place under Luis was David and Christine Smith’s Irish Water Spaniel, Sh Ch & GB Sh Ch Fynder Purple Sage at Leonardston, another group newcomer.

Ashling Connolly’s Bichon Frise, Ch & GB Ch Ashmair Double Act, the eventual BIS 4 winner, was French judge Sylvie Desserne’s choice to top Group 9, whose second place went to Patsy and Wilma McDevitt’s Smooth Coat Chihuahua, Ch Keenaughts Peach Blossom, group 3rd last year at Newtownards.

Austrian judge, Doris Getzinger, was centre ring for Group 10, choosing Willie and Joanne Mullen’s Irish Wolfhound, Ch Broughadowey Tir Eoghian, en route to Reserve Best in Show; for second place Doris selected Carla Bollard O’Callaghan’s BIS winning Afghan Hound, Ch & GB Ch Ashahni Amir, the Group 10 Leaderboard winner for 2012.
