CARLOW '15 BEST IN SHOW
Centre stage in the Best in Show ring was Robin Newhouse, also the BIS judge at Birmingham National this year, and from the ten group winners sent through to him, and in a swift and efficient manner befitting his experience, he awarded top spot to the Group 4 winner, Gary McAlpine’s Miniature Longhaired Dachshund, Baltiyskiy Zakoony Naslednik at Lampcien. A Russian import, 20 months old ‘Misha’ was winning his first group but already has a G3 under Frank Kane at Banbridge and G4 under Liz Roden at Hound Association of Ireland. Taking the RBIS rosette in a case of little and large was another newcomer to the winner’s podium, the Great Dane, Joanne Doyle’s Alainndanes Miracle Man, 14-month-old ‘Clyde’ handled by Amanda Whelan, having won the breed under Robin and then the group under Australian judge Margaret Courtney-Reid.

Robin Newhouse also judged best baby puppy in show where his winner was Freda Ryan’s Cocker Spaniel Bencleuch Ellie Ethna at Donatal, five-month-old ‘Pippa’ giving Freda a very successful return to the ring. Reserve was Magdalena Sikora and Eadaoin Ishii’s four-month-old Japanese Shiba Inu Nishi No Oushou Kazeshimasou.
CARLOW '15 PUPPY STAKES
The stakes judge was James Byrnes, well known for his Lackyle Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and he started with the puppy stakes where his winner was Ger and Laura Cox’s Miniature Bull Terrier Coxgal Lord Monty, son of the BIS winning Multi Ch Grasco’s Honky Tonky; ten-month-old ‘Monty’ already has eight GS and later in the day went on to G3. Runner-up spot was occupied by Clodagh Fallon’s Papillon Pipistrelle Little Buddha at Clodana, nine-month-old ‘Buddy’ also the runner-up at ILKA in July.

James Byrnes’ champion stakes winner at Carlow was Elaine Butler’s Softcoated Wheaten Terrier Ch Ballysax Bremner, ‘Rory’ with two groups to his name, while second place went to Ciaran and Ann Marie Donnelly and Billy Henderson’s Dobermann Ch & GB Ch Tuwos Hrana, group-winning ‘Maebh’ handled today by Sinead Taggart.
CARLOW '15 VETERAN STAKES
Topping the veteran stakes under James Byrnes at Carlow was Andrea Cleary’s eight-year-old Rottweiler Ch & GB Ch Cuchulain The Brave, this win taking him into fourth place on the Royal Canin/Irish Canine Press Veteran Leaderboard. Second place went to Pamela and Ryan Hunter’s Whippet Ch, GB & Int Ch Mossbawnhill It’s All Bout Me, currently in second place on the Leaderboard.
CARLOW '15 BRACE STAKES
Carla Bollard O’Callaghan’s Afghan pairing of Ch, GB & Int Ch Ashahni Amir and Ch Ashahni Celtic Fire won the brace stakes with in second place Jaana Aadamsoo’s Smooth Dachshunds Jagervision Fashionista and Jagervision Farao.

Rosemary Daly-Meehan’s group 1 winner was the Bouvier des Flandres, David McKenna’s Ch Nikolaev Tyrion at Davdeir, who went on to BIS3. Runner-up was Jean, Kelly and Paul Lawless’ Groenendael Ch & GB Ch Revloch Figo, the BIS winner at the IKC Summer show.

The RBIS winner, Joanne Doyle’s Great Dane Alainndanes Miracle, handled by Amanda Whelan, was Margaret Courtney-Reid’s winner in group 2 with second place awarded to Triona Ni’She’s Dobermann Ruholfia Alani; handled by Dean Spires, she clinched her title today.

Internationally renowned terrier judge Una Rigney was in charge of group 3, finding her winner in Sue McCourt’s Australian Terrier Ch & GB Ch Silhill Royal Blue, ‘Aggie’ handled by Caroline O’Reilly in whose care she is currently residing; she has five CCs. In second place was Margaret and Eric Armstrong’s Border Terrier Ch & GB Ch Ploughdown Portia; she has eight CCs, several group placings and was top bitch last year in the UK.

The Dachshunds were judged by Petr Rehanek from the Czech Republic and his group winner, Gary McAlpine’s Miniature Longhaired Baltiyskiy Zakoony Naslednik at Lampcien, went on to BIS. Gerry McFaul’s Long Ch Shardaroba’s Fashion Flow at Dachville took second place, 18-month-old ‘Blaz’ the Northern Ireland Hound Pup of the Year winner earlier this year.

Australian Janelle Wallshaw Robbins, now resident in the UK, judged group 5, finding her winner in Fiona Clarke’s Samoyed Ch Icemist Strombreaker, ‘Chinook’ taking a first group win of the year, with second place awarded to Conor Cahill and Mary Conroy’s Akita Roycon Raising Hell, ‘Zeno’ the puppy stakes winner at Deise.

Heading group 6 under the ever affable Ralph Dunne was Barry O’Neill’s Basset Hound Ch, GB & Int Ch Knockogue Arthurs Legacy, BIS winner at South Tipperary and winning his 17th group of the year, with the runner-up rosette going to Ivor and Michelle Keelan’s Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Ch Afterglow Chunkey Monkey of Tejas, group winner at Kilkenny and RBIS at Carlow last year, in second place.

Gundog specialist Susan Brophy judged both gundog groups, starting with group 7 where her winner was Catherine Kelly’s Hungarian Vizsla Risley Best For Last, nine-month-old ‘Brett’ handled by Jane Anthony. Runner-up was Morag and David Connolly’s Weimaraner Huntly Truly Scrumptious, ‘Arwen’ no stranger to the top spots as she was the group winner and BIS4 at Kilkenny.

Susan Brophy was back centre-ring for group 8, finding her winner in Ivor and Michelle Keelan’s American Cocker Spaniel Bunnybois Brainstorm at Tejas, en route to BIS4. Runner-up was Liam and Brian Moran’s Golden Retriever Sh Ch Shinehill Summer Jazz of Woodmore, ‘Ollie’ the recent BIS winner at the Northern Ireland breed club open show.

Topping group 9 under Australian judge Kirsty Lewis was James Newman and Sean Carroll’s Papillon Ch, Cz & Ger Ch Hundebudens’s Juno Pondabudens, ‘Juno’ winning a third group of the year and into second place on the Gain Petfoods/Irish Canine Press/Dog World Winners Leaderboard. Second was Ashling Connolly’s Bichon Frisé Ch & GB Ch Ashmair Sunshine All The Way, ‘Mimi’ the group winner at Portadown.

Ralph Dunne was back ring centre again, this time judging group 10 where he awarded top spot to Carla Bollard O’Callaghan’s multiple group and BIS winning Afghan Hound Ch, GB & Int Ch Ashahni Amir, ‘Caleb’ taking his second group this year, with in second place Felicity Thompson’s Greyhound Ch Isla at Barnesmore Ad Honores, French import ‘Isla’ the CC winner at Leeds and RCC at SKC.

Noreen Clarke, long time secretary of Carlow, presented Des Kavanagh, former secretary and now show manager and chairman, with flowers from the club for him and his wife Marie, who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on the day.
