Making her judging debut in the Best in Show ring was Rosemary Daly Meehan, well known along with husband, Sean, for her Abylity Belgian Shepherd Dogs and Schipperkes. Making it an unforgettable week, her BIS rosette went to Sally and Howard Tonks’ Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Ch, GB & Int Ch Shanlimore Maverick, who just the previous weekend had clinched his 3rd CC and GB title at Richmond Ch show. He was piloted by Dione Fitzsimons, with whom Darcy has formed a special bond and it certainly shows. Reserve BIS under Rosemary was James Newman’s Papillon, Ch, GB, Ger, Slov & Int Ch Denemore Iconsruben, handled by co-breeder Sean Carroll, recently BIS at Limerick on the Circuit.

Rosemary Daly Meehan was also tasked with selecting Best Baby Puppy in Show, finding her winner in Eamon Keenan’s Lhasa Apso, Heneva Raising The Bets, 5 months old ‘Harry’ handled by co-breeder Henry Stanley, with RBBPIS going to Dionne Fitzsimons’ Dobermann, Fitzkin Has It, just two days younger.

Topping the 38 entries in the Champion Stakes under Eamon Murray was Cybel & Dermot Alford’s Tibetan Terrier, Ch Christate How U Doin, made up earlier this year, he was the group winner at Munster Canine in June; runner-up under Eamon was Tracy Shelly’s Shar Pei, Ch Rozabaron Lord Of Zaralee, group winner at Deise and Bray and CC & BOB at Crufts ’12.

Eamon Murray judged the Puppy Stakes where from the 70 dogs entered hoping to win their ticket to the POTY Finals next Easter, his winner was Des & Joyce Manton’s Old English Sheepdog, Bellablue Bewitched By Scallywag, 7 months old ‘Bubble’ was 3rd in the Stakes at Clonmel and her early career as a Baby Puppy saw her RBBPIS at Cork, Bray and ILKA. Runner-up was Peter & Jacqui Embleton’s 8 months old Bernese Mountain Dog, Nellyvill’s Just Dropped In To Bernemcourt.

CARLOW '12 VETERAN STAKES
Heading up the Veteran Stakes under Eamon Murray was Lyn Appleby, John Minchin & Jane Edwards’ Afghan Hound, Ch Kazanabad Karlo Rossi, 10 years old the following day, handled by Mary Mulvaney, this win still keeping him riding high at the top of the IRISH CANINE PRESS/ROYAL CANIN Veteran Leaderboard for 2012. In second place was Lynda Dunn’s 11 years old Saluki, Multi Ch Padtheway Notorious.

Roger Vanhoenacker from Belgium judged Group 1. Roger’s group winner was Olive Quigley’s BSD Malinois, Bonivant Extreme Force, at only 11 months old, this was his first group win though he was 4th at Dundalk in July. In second spot was Liz & Nigel Bate’s Border Collie, Starside Chelsea for Batendach, belonging to son Matthew, she was made up on the day and this was a fi rst time group placing.

Caroline Maher, well known for her Rathleague Saint Bernards, was centre ring for the first time judging Group 2 and she was thrilled to see her winner, Sally Tonks’ Ch, GB & Int Ch Shanlimore Maverick, handled by Dione Fitzsimons, go all the way to Best in Show. In second place was a delighted Sharon Kelly with her Mastiff, Ch & Int Ch Bredwardine Jester, with a first group placement.

Bull Terrier afi cionado Bill Leslie was another debutant in the big ring when he judged the terriers of Group 3, finding his winner in Ann White’s Irish Glen of Imaal, Ch, GB, Am & Su Ch Abberann Conan, handled by husband Nicky, ‘Homer’ then going on to BIS 4, with in second spot, Ger & Laura Cox’s Bull Terrier, Megaville Plenty More, ‘Charlie’ the group winner at Banbridge earlier in the year.

Visiting judge, David Powers from Mexico, assessed all the Dachshunds and also judged Group 4 where Kerry & Katie Kelly’s Miniature Wire, 13 months old Rioban Felt Finnish For Kmai, emerged victorious to add to her G3 spot as a puppy at Dundalk, with in second place, Lesley Patton’s Standard Wire, Ch Lesandnic Sea The Stars, group winner this year at Combined International and ILKA.

Peter Harsanyi from Hungary was judge elect for Group 5 where his winner was Peri Burnside’s Alaskan Malamute, Multi Ch Tamon Del Biaggio, handled as always by son Adam. Runner-up was Fiona Clarke’s 2 year old Samoyed, North Osetia At Icemist, with a first group placing of the year.

Steve Meredith from New Zealand, assessed the group finalists in Group 6 where he awarded top honours to Fergal Knox’s Beagle, Heathergrove Moonlight Angel, a first group victory for this 2 year old bitch, with Barry O’Neill & Sandra Stack’s BIS winning Basset Hound, Ch & GB Ch Knockogue Arthurs Legacy, in the runner-up spot.

IKC President, Sean Delmar, stepped into the breech judging several breeds at Carlow and also took on Group 7, finding his victor in Aidan McKiernan’s English Setter, Sh Ch Richecca Reach For The Skye, his 6th group win this year and of course he was BIS at South Tipperary and more recently at Bangor & North Down. In second place was Tom and Annie Mervyn’s German Short Haired Pointer, Sh Ch Karlivar Dusky Rose At Tomanipoint, an eighth group placing this year and the winner at Banbridge.

Dick McCoy was home to judge some breeds and also two groups, starting with Group 8 where he gave the winner’s rosette to Colm Beattie, Rita McCarry-Beattie & Mike Bottomley’s American Cocker Spaniel, Sh Ch Boduf Divine, still only 17 months old but today taking her 5th group of the year. Runner-up under Dick was Orlagh Murray’s Golden Retriever, Rathcloon Peaches N Cream, 2 year old ‘Peaches’ taking her first group placing this year.

Dick McCoy judged Group 9 where his winner, James Newman’s Papillon, Ch, GB, Ger Slov & Int Ch Denemore Iconsruben, went on to Reserve Best in Show; runner-up spot went to Cathy & Sean Lydon’s Tibetan Terrier, Ch Tripitaka Cruze Control, a 4th group spot this year.

Mexican judge, David Powers, also judged the Sighthounds of Group 10 where his winner was Michael Western’s Saluki, Ch & Int Ch Ulmarra Salib, en route to BIS 3, with Ivor & Michelle Keelan’s 6 months old Afghan Hound, Nightwind Tejas Two Step, in second place.
