Best in show was the Afghan Hound, Lyn Appleby, John Minchin, Jane Edwards and Mary Mulvaney’s Ch & Int Davashey To Tell The Truth, handled as usual by Mary. ‘Kayto’ was taking his first all-breeds BIS win, though last year he was BIS at the Hound Show, and also took the groups at Hibernian and Cloghran, repeated this year at Portadown. Dr Cristian Vantu chose the Kerry Blue Terrier, Harold and Helena Quigg’s Irisblu Candy Stripes, for RBIS; ‘Candy’ won her first green star in May at Newtownards, and today won her crown under terrier specialist Margret Moller Seiber, she also has a RCC from SKC.

The Shetland Sheepdog, Sevenoaks Angel By My Side, owned by Brenda and Joe Doyle, won the junior stakes under Morag Connolly, who chose for the second place Caterina Caffrey’s Weimaraner Quick Silver Hugel Lilly.

Topping the champion stakes under Morag Connolly was David McKenna’s Bouvier des Flandres Ch Nikolaev Tyrion at Davdeir, with Anne MacDonald’s Border Collie GB Sh Ch Locheil Ooh La La in the runner-up spot.

Morag also judged the veteran stakes, many of the entrants vying for placings on the Irish Canine Press/Royal Canin Top Veteran Leaderboard, which offers crystal for the top four dogs at the end of the calendar year. Winning today was a regular cross-Channel visitor, GB Sh Ch Reubens Silent Reflection, Mary Downward’s English Springer Spaniel, with Pamela and Ryan Hunter’s Whippet Ch, GB & Int Ch Mossbawnhill It’s All Bout Me, adding more points, taking the second rosette.

Fran Kaye, well known in pastoral breeds in England and for her Danfrebek Rough Collies, judged group 1 and found her winner in the Bouvier des Flandres, David McKenna’s Ch Nikolaev Tyrion at Davdeir, winner earlier of the champion stakes. This was his third group win of the year, having taken the rosettes at Banbridge and South Tipp in the spring. Catriona O’Neill Caraher’s Border Collie Sh Ch Huntly I Ain’t No Panda, BIS at Newtownards and G2 at Monkstown, was runner-up.

Isolde Huber from Germany was in charge of group 2. A successful Schnauzer and Pinscher breeder and exhibitor under her vom Rodfeld affix, Isolde chose for her winner the Rottweiler, Michael and Rosslyn Prior’s young Ch Rosamic The Special One; this was her first group win and she took her title on the Trip To Tipp in April. Dione Fitzsimons handled her Dobermann Ch Fitzkin Has It to second place, a second group placing this year as he was fourth at Banbridge.

Margret Möller Sieber of the well-known Wheaten Rebels Soft-coated Wheaten Terriers in Germany, judged group 3 and her winner was the eventual RBIS winning Kerry Blue, Harold and Helena Quigg’s newly crowned Ch Irisblu Candy Stripes. Ross Delmar handled his and breeder Ewa Lunden’s Smooth Fox Terrier Ch, Sw, Norw, Dan & Int Ch Residentsets Stand-In, who has five group wins this year, was BIS at Monkstown, RBIS at Combined National and BIS3 at Swords, to second place.

Mike Turner of the Rafthouse Dachshunds and Pointers was over from Wales to judge the Dachshunds of group 4 and his winner was the Smooth Mys Ch Hacienda Better Tell Dad, who finished BIS4, and is owned by the Reynolds, Fleming, Moes and Williams partnership and handled by Caroline Reynolds. Gerry McFaul’s Longhaired Ch & GB Ch Dachville Special Blend, top Dachshund in Ireland for the last four years and currently top of the Gain Petfoods/Irish Canine Press/Dog World group 4 Leaderboard and the ICP Legacy Leaderboard. ’Jill’ has six group wins this year and was BIS at Kilkenny.

Australian judge Margaret Courtney-Reid did group 5. An all-breeds judge, she exhibited Samoyeds and later German Spitz successfully under her Kossov prefix, and today chose for her winner the Pomeranian, Catherine Carrigan’s Carripom Orlando, over on another visit from Kilsyth near Glasgow. Runner-up went to Stephen Minogue’s Japanese Shiba Inu Ch Jiltrain Jackpott, ‘Jack’ with a great career already well established from puppyhood culminating in winning Pup of the Year and group wins. This year won his first BIS at Hibernian; he took the group and BIS3 at IKC Celtic Winners, the group at Banbridge and Tralee along with other placings putting him second overall on the Gain Petfoods/Irish Canine Press/Dog World group 5 Leaderboard and the Legacy Leaderboard.

Noel Beggs, well known for his Everready Rottweilers, was judging group 6 and sent through the Rhodesian Ridgeback, Lydia Cooper and daughter Rebecca Scott’s Trendsetter Highland Fling for Druimderg; a great start to his career for this young dog who had won through from junior under breed specialist Isolde Huber from Germany, and was just five days out of puppy. Runner-up was the well-known Basset Hound, Barry O’Neill’s Ch, GB & Int Ch Knockogue Arthurs Legacy, and what a legacy he has created with his many, many group and BIS wins.

Ring centre for group 7 was Rita McCarry-Beattie, Irish all-breeds judge well known internationally and treasurer of the IKC, and her winner was the Hungarian Vizsla, Sinead Taggart’s Sh Ch, GB Sh Ch & Lux Ch Bitcon Card Tricks for Cooley, who finished BIS3. Diane Stewart-Ritchie’s Irish Setter Sh Ch & GB Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper took second; five groups and three BIS wins from Munster Canine, Deise and Bray taking him to the top of the group 7 Leaderboard.

Margret Möller Sieber from Germany found her group 8 winner in Catherine Halpin’s Welsh Springer Spaniel Sh Ch Moonlone Travelling Man, his first group win this year. Monica and Mags Boardman’s American Cocker Spaniel Portsann Bling And Sparkle was runner-up, this junior bitch repeating her Monkstown result and she was fourth at the IKC summer show.

Margaret Courtney-Reid from Australia made the group 9 decisions and her winner was the Smooth Chihuahua Ch Lestatt Diamond Boy, his first group win much to the delight of owner Eva Clarke. Dinky is also a Junior Ch, was the top Smooth puppy in Ireland in 2014, won his 20th green star and BOB today and is in the lead for top Chihuahua in Ireland for 2015. Sally Burns handled her, Mary Coghlan and Lesley Howard’s Toy Poodle Ch Grayco Splash The Cash to second place; he was group winner at South Tipp and the IKC summer Show where he finished BIS4 and at Tralee where he was BIS3.

Group 10 was in the capable hands of English hound specialist Keith Thornton, and he found his winner in the eventual BIS-winning Afghan Hound, Lyn Appleby, John Minchin, Jane Edwards and handler Mary Mulvaney’s Ch & Int Ch Davashey To Tell The Truth, with second to Pamela and Ryan Hunter’s Whippet Ch, GB & Int Ch Mossbawnhill It’s All About Me, who was European Winner back in ‘09, and still going strong and taking top awards.

The main ring for Bangor was in the Alexander Hall 1, used by many other shows including Belfast, where in recent years it has been where the benching was set up, sadly always an empty hall as no one ever used the benches as evidenced by many photographs in DOG WORLD over the years.
