At the last show of 2014, BIS at Dublin Dog Show Society was Ann Ingram & Kay Ryan’st Toy Poodle, Tirkane La Vie En Rose, a wonderful end to the year for owner breeders Ann and Kay as they, in partnership with her co owners Marlies Morzik, Lisa Nelson & Leanne Bryant, had also clinched the title of IKC Dog of the Year 2014 with their Ch & GB Ch Tirkane The Big Issue - bringing to a close a fantastic year for the Tirkane kennel. Reserve BIS went to Séan Carroll and nephew, James Newman’s, Pomeranian, Sueacres Unexpected Kisses. CLOGHRAN '14 BEST IN SHOW
Cloghran championship show is the penultimate show of the year in Ireland, and this year it saw an excellent entry of almost 1,250 dogs for the panel of mostly progressing Irish judges to assess. Chris Hancock of Hancourt Labrador Retriever fame was judging best in show for the first time. From the ten group winners he decided that the Siberian Husky, Jimmy Duggan’s Ch/GB/Int Ch Bedarra Cold Paws Warm Heart for Leorient, was his winner, ‘Flint’ handled as ever by Jimmy’s wife Anita Foley-Duggan. Top of Group 5 on the Irish Canine Press/Royal Canin Top Winners Leaderboard, Flint also took the crystal for top group 5 winner in ’12 and was second in ‘13. RBIS went to Mary and Martin O’Donoghue’s Labrador Retriever Philipstown Beach Boy, who had earlier won his second group of the year.

Reserve BIS was Petra Tomasovicova’s Irish Wolfhound bitch, Bloody Mary Tullamore Good Stuff. The show was sponsored by Royal Canin, represented on the day by Mary Davidson, Bangor had an entry of just under 1,100, and enjoyed a sunny Autumn day at the King’s Hall Complex venue at Balmoral, Belfast.

Topping group 2 under Colm Hastings, himself no stranger to the main ring with his Bobtails, was Billy and Josh Henderson’s Dobermann Ch/GB Ch Tuwos Halestorm, ‘Storm’ the BIS winner last year at Clonmel and Limerick and group winner this year at Portadown. In second place was Austin and Ann Long Doyle’s St Bernard Ch/Int/Lux Ch Il Divo Roly by Longsdyle, still on top form after his journey back from Windsor the previous day where he had taken the CC and BOB.

In charge of the terriers in group 3 was Scottish Terrier aficionado Oliver Byrne, whose winner’s rosette went to Ken Crockett’s West Highland White Terrier Havasu Nookie; 14-month-old ‘Pogo’ stepping up from second place the previous day and taking his fifth green star. Second was Una Rigney and Kata Tatjine Burovincz’s Kerry Blue Terrier Hung Ch Dinnyesvarosi Nirvana, ‘Amalka’ taking her third green star since her arrival from her native Hungary.

The Dachshunds in group 4 were judged by Irish all-breeds judge Colette Muldoon whose winner was Trevor Castles’ Miniature Smooth, 14-month-old Dachsbrook Marg at Seltsac, a first group placing, with in second place Gerry McFaul’s Longhaired Ch/GB Ch Dachville Special Blend, ‘Jill’ adding more points to her total at the top of the Irish Canine Press/Royal Canin Leaderboard.

The ever popular Josie Foley, refreshed from her efforts at Kilkenny the previous day, judged group 5, awarding the group to Craig Bannon and Niamh Carroll’s Akita Ch/Am/Int Ch Hoka Hey’s The Power And The Glory, annual champion in the breed for 2013; this was a first group win of the year after group victory at Tralee last year. Second was Maureen and Brian Carroll’s Keeshond Ch/Int Ch Lyntova Legend Has It, group winner at Hibernian earlier this year.

Well known Dachshund man Michael Crowley judged the hounds in group 6 where his winner, Barry O’Neill’s Basset Hound Ch/GB Ch Knockogue Arthurs Legacy, went on to win BIS, his third this year, later in the day. Second was Ivor and Michelle Keelan’s Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Ch Afterglow Chunkey Monkey at Tejas, RBIS at Newtownards in May.

Emerging successful from group 7 under Colm Hastings was the eventual BIS4 winning Hungarian Vizsla, Sinead Taggart’s Sh Ch Bitcon Card Tricks for Cooley, this win taking him to the top of the ICP/Royal Canin Leaderboard for the group, with Tom and Annie Mervyn taking the runner-up rosette with their German Shorthaired Pointer Sh Ch/GB Sh Ch Karlivar Dusky Rose at Tomanipoint, ‘ Lucy’ the BIS here last year.

Margaret O’Gorman, well known secretary of Clonmel show on the Irish Circuit, was centre ring for group 8, finding her winner in the English Springer Spaniel, Sandra and Claire Collins and Ken Woods’ Sh Ch Wenark Drama Queen, who was to go on to BIS3. Second was the American Cocker Spaniel, Colm Beattie, Teresa and Joanna Lynch’s Mygillie Crime Of Passion, group winner recently at Cork, and his points today taking him to the top of the ICP/Royal Canin Leaderboard.

Pauline Keegan, well known for her involvement with the Pekingese over many years, was judge for group 9 where her winner was Rae Dowsett’s Maltese Ch Zumarnik Hot Pursuit, a first group win for five-year-old ‘Percy’, with second to Moira Grant-Cook’s French Bulldog Ch Eastonite Hurricane, handled by husband Ronnie; 18-month-old ‘Bomber’ stepping up from third place recently at Hibernian.

The old racecourse at Tramore is set high up on the top of the hill with spectacular views from any angle and Deise committee utilises every part of the venue, both in front of and behind the main stand, on hard standing and for the stakes and BIS the parade ground is the grassed area used. It is a picturesque setting, if somewhat ‘Victorian’ in era, though the facilities and catering are up to the minute, and on a good day it is pleasant and certainly different, with quite a bit of character not associated with our normal sports grounds and Cloghran venues.

Kilkenny Canine Club celebrated its 40th Anniversary in style with sunshine all the way at a well run show with a great atmosphere at their now traditional venue at The Hub, Cillin Hill, on the outskirts of the historic city. Judging Best in Show was All Breeds judge Des Manton, who just couldn't go past the Tibetan Spaniel, Sharon O'Brien's Ch & GB Ch Rosanley The Adonis at Torfness, his second all breeds BIS this year, following on from his success under Mary O'Donoghue at Hibernian. 'Buddy', currently sitting on 11 CCs, is to date top Tibetan Spaniel in the UK and also in Ireland. Close up and Reserve BIS was the Border Collie, David and Morag Connolly and breeder, Judith Gregory’s, Tonkory Gold Digger at Huntly; 'Digger', a POTY qualifier, already has one CC at just 20 months old and was the Group winner at Newtownards International and as always was handled by David. The show was generously sponsored by HAPPY DOG represented by Jackie Stubbs.

Also a CC winner, she was Annual Ch '13 and topped the Group 1 ICP Leaderboard for 2013. At the IKC Showdog finals she won Group 1 and finished 5th overall. Maureen and Brian Carroll’s Keeshond Ch/Int Ch Arctic Kees Best Kept Secret took another group placing with second spot

Billy Boardman (Portsann Dalmatians, Japanese Spitz and American Cockers) had to choose the winner of group 6 and it was Eamon Murray’s Beagle puppy dog Heathergrove Keats who caught his eye and took the red rosette en route to BIS4. Runner-up went to Ivor and Michelle Keelan’s Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Ch Afterglow Chunkey Monkey of Tejas, a regular winner in this group and currently second on the ICP Leaderboard.

Cocker Spaniel man Les Chambers judged group 7 and his winner was Sinead Taggart’s Hungarian Vizsla Sh Ch Bitcon Card Tricks for Cooley, who went on to BIS3. Second was Diane Stewart-Ritchie’s Irish Setter GB Sh Ch Gwendariff Whippersnapper, just back from Southern Counties where he won his sixth CC and was G2 there also.

Jimmy Byrnes, probably better known for his Lackyle Staffordshire Bull Terriers, was judging group 8 and he found his winner in the American Cocker Spaniel Mygillie Crime Of Passion, owned by Colm Beattie, Teresa Lynch and her daughter Joanna and handled by Colm with whom he lives and who prepares him. ‘Dude’ was BBPIS in show at ILKA last July, has four green stars and this was his debut to top honours in the group ring. Second was Orlagh Murray’s Golden Retriever Rathcloon Peaches N Cream.

Peter Jolley was over from England and he oversaw group 9, giving the red rosette to the Pug Gimili What The Heck Happened, owned by Joanne Dobson and handled by Ian May, with Lee Grogan taking second place with his Japanese Chin Axelwood Karmin, a first entry to group honours for both these dogs.

She was competing in her first puppy stakes and later in the day went on to win the bitch green star. Runner-up was Olive Taylor’s Chow Chivas Royal Djalo at Taylorian, yet another import, this time from Belarus.

Judging the terriers of group 3 was Bill McEntee, known for his many years in Cocker Spaniels, and he gave the nod to Richard Dalton, Philip O’Brien and wife Jarka Poulova’s Kerry Blue, Ch Dalstar Il Divo, winner of the champion stakes earlier in the day, with Ross Delmar’s Smooth Fox Terrier Ch Shillelagh Smooth Operator second, ‘Balloo’ the top terrier on the ICP Leaderboard for the last couple of years.

Carole Mulcahy moved from the sunny climes of Sydney, Australia, over a year ago to the much less temperate location of Ireland. This time it was her task to judge the Dachsunds of group 4 and her winner once again gave Gerry McFaul more points on the ICP Leaderboard, for his Longhaired Ch/UK Ch Dachville Special Blend. Second was Christine Bastable’s Miniature Smooth Chrishanes Maxwell Edison, a previous group winner.

Sally Burns was also ring centre for group 5, and her winner was Liz Wogan’s Keeshond Neradmik Uptown Girl Deminiac, now a GB champion and on her way here to taking her first BIS. Runner-up was Jimmy Duggan’s Siberian Husky Ch/GB/Int Ch Bedarra Cold Paws Warm Heart for Leorient, piloted as ever by wife Anita Foley Duggan who has handled ‘Flint’ to so many top wins both at home and in GB.

John R Walsh Junior judged group 6, finding his winner in Ivor and Michelle Keelan’s Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Ch Afterglow Chunkey Monkey of Tejas, his fourth group this year and he has also three ‘reserves’ and a G4, making him second on the ICP Leaderboard to date. Second was the Dalmatian, Loiusa and son Eddie Casey’s Buffrey Pop Goes The Weasel at Moyglass, just a youngster but already with a G2 at CCC International.

Group 7 saw Johnny Muldoon give top honours to the Pointer, Wendy Fleming’s Sh Ch Carmandine Kimono of Glenariff, a first group win though she was fourth at Newtownards International; she was Annual Champion in both ’12 and ’13. Tom and Annie Mervyn’s German Shorthaired Pointer Sh Ch/GB Sh Ch Karlivar Dusky Rose at Tomanipoint was second; BIS last year at Deise with eight groups, she topped the 2013 ICP Group Leaderboard.

Jeanette Filskov’s Golden Retriever, Crufts G2-winning Ch/GB/Dan/Int Ch Abinvale Traguardo, handled by breeder Emma Archibald, won group 8 under Sandra Whelan. ‘Blue’, back home in Ireland to be campaigned by his breeders, Emma and her parents Bette and Frank, has certainly done them all proud winning his GB crown and BIS and groups in Ireland. Second was Chris and Hilary Laverty’s Cocker Spaniel Laveris Watchme, talking his first group placing.

Johnny Muldoon was also in charge of group 9 and here his red rosette went to Sean Martin’s Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Ch Glencross Alexandria, winning her second group after which she took BIS4; she was top Cavalier ‘13 and won Cavalier Pup of the Year at the final last year. She won this group here last year, one of only two Cavaliers to take a group in ’13 and the only one to win so far year. Sharon O’Brien handled her top winning Tibetan Spaniel Ch/GB Ch Rosanley The Adonis at Torfness to second spot. ‘Buddy’ was BIS a few weeks ago at Hibernian and includes among his many CC and BOBs, Crufts ’13, where he was group shortlisted.

Having a busy day, Johnny Muldoon was back in the ring to decide the best in group 10, and he sent forward the Afghan Hound, Carla Bollard O’Callaghan’s Ch/GB/Int Ch Ashahni Amir, ‘Caleb’ en route to RBIS. Gerry and Pauline Clarke’s Irish Wolfhound Ch Roxanne of Shantamon was runner-up. She was IKC Top Showdog in ’13 and represented Ireland at the Eukanuba World Challenge in Orlando in December 2013.

COMBINED CANINE CLUB PUP OF THE YEAR 2013
Easter Sunday once again saw the previous year's puppy stakes winners from the All Breed Championship Shows in Ireland head for the Moran's Red Cow Hotel in Dublin for the Gain Pup of the Year 2013, sponsored by GAIN PETFOODS and hosted by the Combined Canine Club. This year saw the final decision down to multi breed judge, Tatjana Urek, from Slovenia, who gave the accolade to Eamon Keenan's two years old Lhasa Apso, now Ch Heneva Raising The Bets. 'Harry' became the 27th Irish Pup of the Year.

Fresh from handling the Golden Retriever to his Group 2 win at Crufts, Emma Archibald had a party at IKC CW after the breed judging to celebrate 'Blue's' win. Celebrating this super win by Sh Ch Dan & Int Ch Ch Abinvale Traguardo, owned by Jeanette Filskov in Denmark, but back to his home kennel and breeders, Emma and her mum Bette and dad, Frank, are fellow gundog exhibitors who enjoyed a toast and nibbles, wishing Blue the luck of the Irish for his third CC.

Having done just about all that a dog could do, Lynda Cuthbert Matthews and husband Colin's Whippet, Ch GB & Int Ch Collooney He's The One, has now been retired from the showring. Nine years old 'Brad' won groups as recently as '13 when he was also a player in the Veteran Stakes though shown on just a few occasions, and finished joint third for Veteran of the Year. A party in Brad's honour was held after the judging at IKC CW, a special cake and plenty of other goodies and bubbly was shares by friends and admirers.
