John J Walsh was judging Best In Show and it was Yvonne Cannon who took the Best in Show rosette for her Shih Tzu, Ch Cloughlea Dare To Believe, ‘Max’, who finished 5th overall in the POTY last Easter, also had a group win and a Reserve Best in Show at Portadown Ch Show last year under Anita Foley Duggan, just two weeks before his 2nd birthday. John then made the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Melanie Corcoran’s Ch & UK Ch Zakstaff What’s The Story at Molru, his Reserve BIS winner, ‘Rory’ having earlier won his first ever group or group placing under Marie Hogarty; Staffies rarely seem to hit the top in Group 3 for some reason, even though this dog was fresh from taking his 4th CC at Crufts the previous weekend.

Runner up was the Dobermann Pinscher, Stephen Richardson and Frank Carberry’s Rokpinsch Denzel; ‘Ramos’ is also 5 months old – so a nice start for these youngsters. Ralph Dunne judged the Champion Stakes and had an excellent entry of 37 dogs, here his winner was the Kerry Blue, ‘Harry’, Cork BIS winning Ch & GB Ch Kebulak Dirty Harry, handled by Cathy Neill who owns him in partnership with breeder, Cara Davani. With six group wins in 2012, ‘Harry’ finished the year top Kerry. Runner up was Sally Burns and Mary Coghlan’s Toy Poodle, Ch Valentine Something Special, group winner at ILKA last July.

Ralph Dunne of the Richley Clumber Spaniels (and now Jack Russell terriers) judged all the stakes classes at Celtic Winners and he had a great entry of 82 in the Puppy Stakes, with his winner being Eamon Keenan’s Lhasa Apso, Heneva Raising The Bets, now off to the POTY in 2014, while Seamus and Maura Gettings’ Dobermann baby, Beechillawn Mo Farrah, was 2nd. Both are homebred and the Dobe at his first championship show.

Group 1 was judged by Heather Salmon Wilson, who, together with husband, Ian, had judged all the breeds in the group, and she gave Geraldine Mulrooney the group winners rosette for her homebred Old English Sheepdog, 13 months old Bellablue Fellabreda; Féile at his first ever show and earlier having taken his first Green Star and BOB. Group 2nd and also taking a first group place, was Catriona Dunne’s Shetland Sheepdog, Japara Designed To Dazzle at Longrange Jun Ch, last year’s Celtic Junior Winner.

Topping Group 2 under Patricia Kehoe was Austin and Anne Long Doyle’s St Bernard, Ch Il Divo Roly by Longsdyle, ‘Roly’ Group and BIS last December 27th at Dublin Dog Show Society; ‘Roly’, is on a roll again, following his run in 2012 when he finished Top Group 2 dog on the ICP/Connolly’s Red Mills Leaderboard. Taking the 2nd spot here was Willie and Mandy Dobbin’s Newfoundland, multi Group and BIS winning Ch & GB Ch Brooklynbear Nijinsky, piloted as ever by son, William.

Taking Group 2nd was Gerry McFaul’s top winning Standard Long Haired, Ch & GB Ch Dachville Special Blend, ‘Jill’ with 8 groups last year and 8 CCs to her credit, was Top Dachsund 2012 last year on the ICP/Connolly’s Leaderboard and Top UK Long Haired Bitch in ’11 and ’12.

Runner up was Mrs A Cobb-Magill’s Dalmatian, Int, Nord, N, DK & Ger Ch Spotnik’s Diva Deluxe, earlier having taken GSD and BOB under Steven who judged all of the Group 6 breeds.

Stephenie Kelly handled mum Sharon’s Gordon Setter, Sh Ch Minvery’s Angus McDuff to 2nd place – he was the Group 7 winner at the Gundog Show last August.

Group 2nd went to the Irish Wolfhound, Gerry and Pauline Clarke’s Rhea of Shantamon, who later in the day took the Irish Native Breeds Group under Susan Kealy.

Now almost 18 months old, ‘Twitch’ has enjoyed quite a winning career, having taken best overall in the Tibetan Breeds Gala under Michael Forte when she was just four months old. Now a junior champion, she was puppy stakes winner at Banbridge under June Bollard and took BPIS at Fermoy international under the aforementioned Michael Forte, who must have been delighted to see her go so far at the final.

Taking centre stage in the Best in Show ring was Noel Beggs, well known for his and wife June’s Everready Rottweilers, and fresh from their success at the Pup of the Year Final. From the ten group winners, Noel selected Billy & Josh Henderson and Ciaran and wife, Ann-Marie’s Dobermann Pinscher, the very successful Ch & GB Ch Tuwos Hrana for Best in Show. Unbelievably, this was ‘Maebh’s’ first such success, following the lead set by her dam, Ch & GB Aritur Hipnotique, ‘Zena’ who was BIS at Portadown in 2009 and is the Bitch breed record holder in the UK. ‘Maebh’ was the group winner last year at Hibernian and IKC National as well as her many successes in her forays across the water. Heading up Group 3 under Australian judge, Kerry Lee, was Harold and Helena Quigg’s Kerry Blue Terrier, Torums Calico Jack At Irisblu, ‘Jack’ on the threshold of gaining his GB title a few weeks later; in second spot was Harry O’Donoghue’s Wire Fox Terrier, Ch Blackdale Julie, yet another of the Blackdale kennel’s top winners, with a number of group placings towards the end of last year, RBIS at the All Terrier, and group 3 at Celtic Winners this year.

Paul Scanlon, well known for his Whitecliff Miniature Schnauzers, but in earlier years very much an a gundog aficionado, judged Group 7 where his victor was Ken Kennedy’s Irish Setter, Sh Ch & GB Sh Ch Glenarra Coer De Lion, a big winner both at home and across the water as his dual titles testify; Paul’s second place rosette was awarded to another top winner on both sides of the Irish Sea, Aidan McKiernan’s English Setter, Sh Ch Richecca Reach For The Skye, the IKC Celtic Winners and Combined group winner, soon to have his 3rd CC.

Rita Kadike Skadina was back centre ring again, this time for Group 9 where Henry Stanley and Gordon Gault’s Pekingese, Ch Moonwhispers Intrigue Fate, took top honours, after two G4 finishes at both IKC Celtic Winners and Combined in the previous weeks; keeping it very much in the family was Henry’s nephew Eamon Keenan when he handled the Lhasa Apso, Heneva Raising The Bets, into second place, a precursor to other successes later in the calendar.

Lyn Richardson was judging Best in Show at South Tipperary, and she gave the accolade to David and Jacqui Benson’s Bernese Mountain Dog, Ch & GB Ch Patrick De La Galea at Bernervalley. ‘Patrick, who took the CC at Crufts this year and had earlier won his International title under breed judge, José Tomás Delgado Cabezas, won his GB crown in just eight weeks, and was the breed’s Triple Crown winner in 2011. José Tomás Delgado Cabezas from Madrid was running the rule over the dogs of Group 5, his eventual winner being Maureen and Brian Carroll’s Keeshond, Ch & Int Ch Arctic Bees Best Kept Secret, another taking a first group placement this year, and taking 2nd place was Jennifer Garry’s New Zealand imported Samoyed, Beyond Continue the Chaos, who had earlier won BOB from Junior Bitch under Jean McErlane, coincidentally also a ‘Kiwi’.

Topping Group 6 under Canadian, Terry Carter, was Barry O’Neill and Sandra Stack’s homebred Basset Hound, Ch & GB Ch Knockogue Arthurs Legacy, now a legend in his breed in Ireland with 15 groups and 2 BIS wins last year alone, some 6 or 7 CCs, Top Group 6 on the Leaderboard in 2012, and he’s back up there again with 4 groups from 6 shows in 2013. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Afterglow Chunkey Monkey at Tejas, owned by Ivor and Michelle Keelan, took 2nd place.

Gundog specialist, Mrs P Williams from the UK judged a large proportion of the breeds in both group 7 and 8, and also officiated in the Group 7 ring where she found her winner in Tom and Ann Marie Mervyn’s German Shorthaired Pointer, Sh Ch Karlivar Dusky Rose at Tomanipoint, who finished BIS 4; Group winner at Banbridge last year, she was 2nd here last year and also at Bray & Carlow, and acquitted herself collecting CCs in GB on rare visits. Second here was Cathy Loughlin’s homebred Irish Setter, Rohanmor You Were Made For Me, owned in partnership with Katie Kelly, and currently top of the breed with his group placings this year.

In 2nd place, another big winner, Carla Bollard O’Callaghan’s Afghan, Crufts BOB & Group 3 last year, Ch & GB Ch Ashahni Amir, multi BIS winner and top Afghan for the past three years.

Judging BIS at Fermoy International was Jean McErlane from New Zealand, making a welcome return to Ireland. Her Best in Show went to the Bichon Frise, Ashing Connolly’s homebred Ch & GB Ch, Ashmair Double Act, a young dog well used to the limelight, both at home and across the water in the UK where he holds both titles and by virtue of his win at the IKC Showdog Finals in 2012, was Ireland’s representative at the Eukanuba Challenge in America in December. A Pup of the Year winner, ‘Beau’ has 5 CCs and 5 Res CCs and, whilst in America, won 2 Majors towards his USA title. Reserve BIS went to another dog who has hit the high spots in recent years, Catherine Kelly’s Hungarian Vizsla, Sh Ch & Lux Ch Risley Mark The Moment, yet another prolific BIS winner, handled in the main ring by Jane Anthony.

Our resident Australian, Wal Westren, judged the Dachshunds in Group 4, awarding top spot to Gerry McFaul’s top winning Long Haired Ch & GB Ch Dachville Special Blend; ‘Jill’ was top Dachshund last year with no fewer than eight Groups, and this year has the group from Banbridge and 2nd at IKC CW on St Patrick’s Day. She also now has 5 CACIBs and 8 CCs. Allan & Dick’s Miniature Wire Haired Dachshund, Rodrigo Diervilla, Group winner the previous day, was 2nd.

The honour of judging Best in Show at Hibernian 2013 fell to Joy O’Connor, one of Ireland’s All Breed judges, well known for her family involvement in Airedale Terriers (her Grandmother, Dorothy Discon) and Dachshunds ( her Mum Eileen) and her own and her Mum’s in Penrose Bichon Frise, a real doggie dynasty. From the ten group winners, Joy’s choice was Jimmy Duggan’s Siberian Husky, Ch & Int Ch Bedarra Cold Paws Warm Heart For Leorient. Three year old Swedish import ‘Flint’, handled as usual by wife Anita, has had a spectacular career since arriving in Ireland, winning the Junior Champions Contest as a youngster, 2 CCs across the water (to be three later in the year) with BIS at Working Pastoral Breeds of Wales, and at home Best in Show wins last year at Munster Canine, Dundalk and Monkstown. Reserve BIS was awarded to Yvonne Cannon & Mum, Bernie Ladd’s Shih Tzu, Ch Cloughlea Dare To Believe, 2 ½ years old ‘Max’ another top winner, BIS earlier in the year at the IKC Celtic Winners show in March, today his 3rd group win.

Reserve best in Show was the Beagle, Eamon Murray’s Davricard Mitchell of Heathergrove. This was young Andy’s first group, and he was best Puppy in Show at the big Navan open event under GB judge, Diane Sadler earlier in the year.

As is now traditional, Best Baby Puppy in Show was judged by the BIS judge, usually the only other task they have on the day and Mary Searson chose the young Basset bitch, Barry O’Neill’s ‘Blondie’, Dereheath Highlight with Dearduenna; what a way to kick start her career. Runner up was the Coton De Tulear, Peter Summersgill and Bernie Doherty’s homebred Clanlee Miss Mischievous.

Ring centre for Group 1 was well known International all breeds judge Ann Cuthbert, who gave the nod to Patricia Kavanagh and Eoin Fleetwood’s Bearded Collie ‘Oscar’, Ch Firstprizebears JohnFK. A Dutch import, he was taking his first group this year though he won the group at ILKA last year and was 2nd at Tralee. He was to go on later to take Best in Show at the Bearded Collie Club Ch Show, held at the same venue. A delighted Geraldine Mulrooney claimed the rosette for 2nd with her young OES, homebred Bellablue Lolabreda, who was also Celtic Winner ’13.

Des Manton judged Group 2, and he found his winner in the Newfoundland, Willie and Mandy Dobbin’s Ch & GB Ch Brooklynbear Nijinsky, a multi group and BIS winner, his most recent top award was at Newtownards, just a few weeks back. He was expertly handled as ever by ‘Young Willie’. Des’ 2nd spot went Jean Cullen’s Dobermann, Ch Tuwos Impeccable, handled by co-breeder Josh Henderson.

The Bull Terrier, Ch Megaville Plenty More, owned by Ger and Laura Cox won Group 3 under Ann Cuthbert, his first Group win this year though he was 2nd at Fermoy International. Runner up was Ross Delmar’s BIS winning Smooth Fox Terrier, Ch Int Ch Shillelagh Smooth Operator, a regular at the top of the groups.

Group 4 was judged by Stephen Hourihan, here Michael Crowley’s young bitch, Eleanors Surprise at Donnamarc, who is not yet 8 months old, collected the red rosette, whilst Gerry McFaul’s Long Haired, Ch & GB Ch Dachville Special Blend, was the runner up.

The judge for Group 5 was Johnny Muldoon, and his winner gave a first top win to the Alaskan Malamute, James Clarges and his daughter’s Lueldar The Warlock at Chanlow, with Ralph and Sue Holmes’ Siberian Husky, homebred Suraliam All Hail The King, in 2nd, also a first group placing for this dog and handled by Ralph.

Ralph Dunne was overseeing the Group 6 dogs and his winner here was the Beagle, Eamon Murray’s young Davricard Mitchell of Heathergrove, ‘Andy’ going on to Reserve Best in Show. He chose Eddie and Gail Patterson’s Rhodesian Ridgeback, Ch Rocksham Kimweri, for 2nd place.

Des Manton was ring centre for the gundogs of Group 7 and his winner was Tom and Annie Mervyn’s German Short Haired Pointer, Sh Ch Kalivar Dusky Rose at Tomanipoint, her fourth group this year and second in succession. Diane Stewart-Ritchie handled her homebred Irish Setter, Gwendariff Gonna Be Special, owned in partnership with Ruth Longbottom and her Mum, to take the 2nd rosette.

Brian Moran judged Group 8 and his winner was Emma, Bette and Frank Archibald’s homebred Golden Retriever, Sh Ch Abinvale The Aviator, ‘Denver’also won the group here last year: he topped the breed for 2012 when he also won the group at IKC International. Mags and Monica Boardman’s American Cocker, Am Ch PBJ’s All That Bling, their latest American import, took Group 2nd, handled and prepared as ever by Monica.

It was the BIS winning Bichon Frise, Ashling Connolly’s Ch & GB Ch Ashmair Double Act, who won Group 9 under well known CKCS breeder, Heather Lamont who gave Group 2nd to Sally and Sean Burns and Mary & Val Coghlan’s Toy Poodle, homebred Ch Valentine Something Special.

Group 10 winner was Gerry and Pauline Clarke’s Irish Wolfhound, Ch Roxanne of Shantamon, group winner at Hibernian and last year she was BIS at Sligo and won the group at ILKA. She is Ireland’s representative at this year’s Eukanuba Challenge in America, having won the IKC Top Showdog finals in February. Second place under judge Eric Liebes from the USA went to Carla Bollard–O’Callaghan with her Afghan Hound, Ch & GB Ch Ashahni Amir, group winner at Munster Canine.

In second place came the Shetland Sheepdog, Brenda and Joe Doyle’s Ch Sevenoaks Gold Edition, top Shetland for the past two years, he was G3 at Banbridge this year.

Bred in Finland by Mesdames Heinonen and Saa, 3 years old ‘Olly’ is co-owned by Kelly, Kevin Sharp Dixon and Jude Reyes. Today it was Carmel O’Riordan who put the icing on the cake for ‘Olly’. Carmel is one of our senior judges and today was making her farewell appearance centre ring; her choice for RBIS was the American Cocker Spaniel, the multi – owned Keenan, Nelson, Nelson and Bryant’s GB Sh Ch Nasilleen In The Buff, 2 ½ years old ‘Roudi’ has 12 CCs in the UK, including Crufts this year. Noel’s choice for runner-up in this very diverse group went to Sean Carroll and James Newman’s well known and very successful Pomeranian, Ch, GB & Int Ch Belliver The Ultimate Creation, ‘Victoria’ a prolific group and BIS winner throughout her career.

Noel’s second place winner was Maureen and Alan Miles’ Bichon Frise, Hylacer Just One Look At Alareen.

Lhasa Apso aficionado, Chris Cathcart, was making his debut centre stage in the Best in Show ring and from his ten group winners, he chose for top spot the Kerry Blue Terrier, GB Ch Torums Calico Jack, taking his second Best in Show inside a few weeks as he triumphed at Swords in mid June. Co-owned by Harold Quigg and breeder Ron Ramsay, shown by Harold, and encouraged and show managed by Helena, 3 years old ‘Jack’ has 3 CCs and was BIS at the UK Club show. His pick after shortlisting the group to the final four was Ann Ingram and Kay Ryan’s Toy Poodle, Tirkane The Big Issue handled by Ann. ‘Isak’, who is still only 11 months old, and won today from puppy. Reserve BIS was the Kerry Blue, Harold Quigg and Ron Ramsey’s GB Ch Torums Calico Jack at Irisblu, Best in Show at Swords in June and Bray just a couple of weeks back. Three CCs at Club shows clinched his GB title in short time.

The Bichon Club of Ireland held a four breeds championship show in conjunction with Dun Laoghaire, judged by Ashling Connolly of Ashmair Bichon fame. Ashling selected a ‘Best Overall’, chosing to give the rosette to Catherine Black, for her Maltese, Ch Mion Bitter Sweet, and the runner up to the puppy, Anita Fogarty’s Bolognese Bounien Gents Prefer Blondes at Vauboyen.

TRALEE '13 Charity Bike Ride
Two ex Junior Handlers undertook a‘Circuit’ Bike Ride to raise money for the chosen charity for the Minority Breeds, which now includes on its committee, some ex Juniors. Lorna Bermingham and Brendan Beattie decided that they would ‘Cycle The Circuit’ and raise money for Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland, and from their 500km ride, sometimes on very hilly roads, they have managed, so far, to raise €2,500.

Lorna Bermingham and Brendan Beattie were presented with a small token of their achievement from Tralee Chairman, Ned Burke, and BIS judge, Nick Hammond, whose company sponsored their accommodation en route. Limerick Show organised a massage for them on the Thursday, a welcome chance to relax those tired muscles, and they looked relieved that Tralee, their final destination, and a hot shower, had finally been reached.

A surprise birthday party at the side of the Hound rings on the last day of the circuit for Emer Mooney, currently enjoying great success with her Deerhound ‘Elsie’, aka Ch Rosslyn Quartet, but probably better known for her many years’ connections with her successful Irish Water Spaniels and also Whippets, shown under her Currabell prefix. We were all to polite to ask which landmark it was, but there was plenty of cake and ‘refreshments’ supplied by her friends, and a super atmosphere around the ring.
